Moss in pond

How do you keep moss from taking over your pond? I like to fish and swim in our pond, but when you have to clean your lure off everytime you cast it takes the fun out of fishing in a hurry. I have tried copper sulfate. I have heard rumors about putting barley straw at the head of the pond, but I have not tried that yet. Anybody have techniques that works for them?

Moss? doubt that. Find out what it really is. Probably a weed that diquat will handle.

I have a friend that sells barley straw for that purpose. Don't know much about how it works. They buy a couple bales and throw it in I guess. I know he has the same cust.coming back every year for it. I think he gets 9-10 bucks a bale for it as it is a rare product to get around here.

Place a barley straw flake or two around the pond shoreline every 30-40 feet just under water. As it decomposes the straw releases polyphenols which inhibit growth and kills many aquatic pond plants. Effective for 90-120 days if placed early in season. Fully established or rooted aquatics will probably take chemical control. Barley straw is rare and hard to find.

Barley straw works but it's best to get it in there before you get the mess. If you put a lot it in after the gunk is already heavy it turns your water yellow. Got a bail for a guy next to our shop here and he put a section in his little decorative pond and it looked like a puddle of whizz. Depending on size of your pond etc. you might want to start off with just a little bit and gradually increase it until you see improvement. It does work... saw it work every year at my buddys pond. His pond is roughly 60-100 foot diameter? and maybe eight foot deep at the center. Just a hole for the cows to drink from. If I recall correctly I believe he only put in a couple of sections off a bail. But he might have added now and then after that?? not sure...

Simazine is not legal for aquatic use, nor is Diuron. Use only aquatic labeled products. If this moss is algae, an aerator and a product Green Clean, which is hydrogen peroxide, is really good. It doesnt have the toxicity of the copper sulfate, either. As a commercial applicator with lots of lakes here in Florida, it would be my choice. Post a picture of the weed and I"ll help you choose the right herbicide.

i have five grass carps in my pond and you cant find any evidence of moss or any kind of algea growing they eat every bit it is clean as a whistle.
