i have a border collie-heeler dog that stays in the house with me when I am alone. She knows what is going on outside and is normaly well behaved and barks only when something is wrong. Yesterday she was crazy and just kept barking. I would look out and could never see anyrhing. When my son came I told him and he said she was upset because there was a big crowd in town about a half mile and that is what she heard. Guess he was right today she is alright.

It is amazing how dogs or any other animal can sence something. If there is a big storm coming our dog walks up to the bathroom and lays down near the toilet. strange!! but she is never wrong.. guess she feels safe there.

When I was a kid on the farm, we had a dog, "Old Shep". He had to be the dumbest dog ever to walk the face of the earth. That dog was living proof that God has a sense of humor.

His only redeeming quality was with my sister playing the piano and me playing the fiddle, we could get him to howling so loud the folks threw all three of us out of the house.

We have a little lap dog that I have seen a few times be laying on the floor and jump up having a fit . Get up to let him out and there be a deer down on the road 100 yards away . There is no way he can see down there till he gets out the door . It is hard to figger how they do the things they do . My wife gets home from work about 3:00 , at 2:30 all four of our dogs are sitting looking down the drive waiting on her and none of them have a watch .

When we were growing up we had a golden lab. He was very protective of our Mother. If Dad or any of us boys were home, anyone could come or go around the house. But if Mom were there alone he would not let anyone out of their car. If someone came to visit and we were not there she had to go out side and hold him till they got in the house. He was member of the family we all loved him. One quick story. Went dove hunting Dad my two brothers, dog and Me in a station wagon right near a cow pasture. When the hunt was over everybody back to the car loading our stuff. The dog cuts across the corner of the pasture finds a very fresh runny pile. By this time everyone is ready to go and start calling him to get in the car. he looks at us and takes off in the opposite direction goes 30 or 40ft.Then comes running back and slides through the pile on his side. Gets up and does the same thing on the other side. Then he proudly comes trotting up to the car wanting to get inside to go home. We made him run behind the car for about a mile to get to a cousins house to wash him off.He was quite a character.

Neighbor's bull came visitin' yesterday and sure wanted in with my heifers in a big way.

So, I signaled the dog to take care of the matter for me. Was enjoyable watching him tear into that big 1700lb bull and move 'im back out on the road.

He has way more guts than I have, that's for darned sure. :>)

My family has had Border Collies for 35 years. They are a very active animial but very smart and will do anything to please you.
Glad you had a good experience.

We had a female boxer that would run up to the front window and give a little bark when my wife was coming home. She could hear my wife's truck, when it turned off the gravel a mile away!!

Our dog is a dumb mutt to say the least. Won't bark at strangers coming into the drive, but barks up a storm when any of the family arrive. I din't need a family alarm. Part shepherd, he got out in the pasture the other day and three or four ewes had him cornered, and were butting him. Had to rescue him from the sheep! He was twice their size.

WIFE [not me] has a house cat. Lots of nights at 11.15 the cat will get up,go to the carport window, and watch out.
Wife works 2 nd shift, gets off 11:08,and arrives home about 11:40.
Guess cat uses den clock,as she doesn't have a watch of her own.

How do they know??? When I was a kid I had a collie mix that was my hunting, hiking, camping companion. I had made a pack for him to carry stuff and when he saw me get it out he got all excited. He knew we were off on another adventure. During school, he would walk my sister to school, always following behind her and her friends. Kids would'nt bother her but if an adult came walking up, he would get between that person and the girls. He would sit at the gate until the bell rang for classes to start. Then he would walk home. School was out at 3:00 and he would wake at 2:30 from a sound sleep and run to school to walk the girls home. That was the only time he had anything to do with my sister.

Yes I have a Border Collie too, "The Einstein of The Dog World" as they say. They are indeed, super-intelligent unlike the person who wrote this on a website which I was looking at yesterday which really annoyed me "Country of origin - U.S.A." WHAT! (Instant facepalm) They actually originally came from the border country between England and Scotland ( Hence BORDER Collie ). Suffice to say, I did not add that website to my favourites!

You should see"and hear" the competition between these two as to who can sound the earliest and loudest alarm when some one arrives[any one] the school bus is coming, the dog next door is in the street, some one is walking by on the side walk and on and on. Some times I kick them both out the back into the fenced yard to get some quiet.JH

I'd say that's pretty smart, it's the only seat in the house that is bolted down, never moves, must be safe. Makes sense to me!

My wife is a Librarian at our School system.
When the school bus comes down the road he
starts looking out the window, for soon, "Mom"
will be home!
