Sorghum Press

Anybody make sorghum molasses? I am looking for a little mill, probably one of the old mule powered ones if I can find it. Would like to make a family boil an annual event.

Welcome to sorghum making. Started a few years ago as a family get together with something everyone can take home with them.

I bought a Cook 2 horse mill and converted it to belt drive using a 3-5 HP International LB engine from a #15 McCormick hay baler.Works great, with good stack music.

Where are you located? I am in west Ky.

Last year was extremely dry as you well know, so sugar content was exceptionally high. We cooked about 150 gallons of juice that boiled down to 20 gallons of sorghum. Normally the same amount of juice makes about 15 gallons of syrup. It was also the best batch ever, eat some about every day.
What part of Mo. are you located? We have visited the southern part around Van Buren, very pretty and interesting place. Joe

Thats another thing I like about sorghum, grows in a drought, apparently better than not. What variety you using Joe? I ordered orange Rox.

Our little farm is south of fulton, which is about center of the state. We have some exposed rock on our place, but the soil is a little deeper than south in the Ozarks and the deer are bigger. Fishing is poorer. I am going to try to look at a mill this week. The man has a JD he is looking to sell for $500.

Dale is the variety I have been using. Its a fairly long season variety with good disease resistance, along with good soughum qualities. Its available from the University of Mississippi.

Good luck with your mill hunt and sorghum makin.

Betty,my wife has an aunt that lives in Columbia. We visited her a couple years ago.
