Transmission fluid in diesel

I'm out of off road diesel and live a little ways from the fuel company. They can't get to me until Friday to fill my tanks. I know automatic trans fluid is good to use to increase the sulfur content in highway diesel, but how much should I add to a 40 gallon tank? I can get highway diesel 2 miles up the road versus 40 miles.

I think ATF was used a lot back in the days of "type A & F", but modern fluids with additives & friction mods. is supposed to be harmful to pumps-as said, red color doesn't make the fuel differant anyhow--

So your saying highway diesel won't hurt? I just need to finish baling 10 acres of hay before the rain comes tomorrow.

Fuel hauler for 35 + years. The red dye is for the IRS to ID the stuff so truckers don't cheat on road tax.

Only difference between the dyed fuel and the road-use fuel is the color added and the price. Diesel fuel is diesel fuel. Number 2 diesel, all the same.

Most all heating oil is also just diesel fuel. Now with the ultra low sulfur issue, it's possible there aren't the attitives in the furnace fuel, but mostly it's also just #2 diesel....

In cold condtions some gets blended with a bit of anti-gel attitive, or #1 diesel fuel which does not gel. But still and all, it's all just diesel fuel, all works in a diesel engine the same. Only difference is the red color is added to the stuff that is not road-taxed.

Believe me, you dont want "to increase the sulfer content". Sulfer is terrible for any engine. When they make low sulfer, or ultra low sulfer, they remove the sulfer or anti-pollution purposes, which ALSO remove some of the natural lubricity of the diesel. You are adding "lub" NOT sulfer. And, as others have said red dyed diesel is exactly the same fuel as the green stuff. My local distributor justs add the red dye in order to sell it without road taxes. Tom

I question whether ATF has any sulfur or that it increases sulpfur content. My Buddy was an Allis Chalmers dealer for over forty years and he always recomends ATF in diesel fuel to remove moisture from the fuel system,ATF has an affinity for moisture and will clean up water in a fuel tank on a tractor, the ATF adds lube qualities to the pump and in no way harms pump, injectors and actually adds potential energy to the fuel

I read somewhere on this site awhile back about useing 2 cycle oil for diesel lube additive. If it works in a 2 cycle to do all the lube for the engine it should lube the diesel injection pump in a diesel. Haven't tried it yet in any of my old olivers.

All diesel fuel sold for use in the US is Ultra-Low Sulfur diesel. Additive is used for identification. I think Mexico still has low-sulfur diesel and some of Asia and maybe South America where emissions laws really haven't been enacted.
