OT-test soil for spray

I just bought this house and yard. It has been vacant for one or two years. No grass and front lawn is hard as a rock. I have been soaking it well for a week now, but it seems to me that the weeds don't grow like they should. I wonder if some one used weed killer on it. (HUD) I just planted a pot of the soil with 2 kinds of beans and some radish seeds. I heard that beans were a sure test. I may want to use some of this soil in a planter box, so I need to be sure. Any suggestions?

It's probably compacted to near concrete from years of neglect, parking cars on it etc. Get a pro in there with a tiller and some black dirt and start from scratch if you really want a nice lawn and garden.

When my grandfather bought his fixerupper place in 58, the back yard was a tangle of dead blackberry bushes, and bare ground. He mentioned to the neighbor that "he had seen some mighty poor ground, but never ground that wouldn't support weeds". The neighbor (who had worked for the railroad for many years building trestles) tole him, That's because I brought home some stuff from work hat we use on the railroad to keep the weeds down. After that he spread all the horse manure that the neighbors horses produced on the ground. 60 years later, I own it and that ground makes a great garden every year.
