Looking on line to buy a mower belt for a 42 inch MTD, OEM#754-0371A. Some say they are kevlar reinforced and some don't mention kevlar. At lowes, they want around $32 for a kevlar belt. Have found some much cheaper on ebay. Looking for opinions from people who buy on line. I can purchase a gates belt locally for around $12.50, however it is not kevlar. Is a kevlar belt worth buying? Thanks George

If you buy one without the Kevlar buy a couple. The Kevlar makes them not stretch. I have worked on several of MTD branded mowers and they use the Kevlar belts in several applications. They usually are a narrower belt to run at an offset better. So if you replace them with a regular belt it will match the width but will not have the load carrying ability of the OEM belt. So they usually will not last long. I have seen them not mow the yard once.

You need the Kevlar belt. They are designed to take more heat. The belt clutch system in a mower is designed to loosen the tension around the drive pulley. When you reengage it the system slips for a bit (thus heating) before it runs with no slip. Nonreinforced belts are for use in systems where they never slip on the pulley like your drive belts in a car or on your tablesaw. If it slides on the pulley plan for reinforced.
