if not an IH 50 series, what is is good bets?

on a tracotr 130-170 hp, that has a decent cab, and is a fairly trouble free tractor. Would like FWA but that price is really getting up there. Farm 250 acres, but going to shoot for 400 and stop there. I need something that I can get things done fairly quickly as I have a pretty busy day every day with the rest of the farm operation. Mainly want to go from having 5 older 60-120 horse tractor to 2 or 3, bigger, newer, but want to get it under that $20,000 mark. Local dealers are Case IH, Big Gr$$n, and an agco dealer about 30 miles away. My summer will consist of searching for new ones and finishing the resto on the old ones.

An 8000 series AC would be a good fit. 8050 would be about 150-160 horse, had MFWD, pretty good 12 speed powershift. Should be able to find one under 20.

My personal choice would be a Ford TW25 (140 h.p.) or TW35 (170 h.p.) Old enough to be in your price range (maybe even with fwa), and your CIH dealer can provide parts and service if needed. Efficient and reliable, too.

I agree the Ford is a good choice-good fuel economy(the deere will DRINK fuel)-good reliable tractors(in fact, new Fords are starting to push deere aside). What about a White?2-150 or 2-180

8000 series in that HP range had a few motor issues. If i was looking, i'd want one that's had motor work. 8010 would be my choice with fwd. for field work a power director works good and they are much cheaper then a powershift.
fords are another good choice. even 40 series JD aren't bringing much over 20 around me. If you stay with 2wheel drive; there should be multiple choices, it when you kick in the FWD, that's when it gets dicey to find anything decent below 35k

You could get a Deere 30 or 40 series articulated tractor in the 15 to 20 thousand range that probably has an updated motor (50 series). As with any tractor service records are very important to making a decision as to buying. I would somewhat leery of buying one in the "auction row" history unknown. We're running an 8430 with a 50 series motor here and the fuel economy is pretty good. Pretty good power but does not have it like something that would have 550 cubes or more. Anything with several thousand hours you will want to see if the hi-lo has been replaced, axle bearings within tolerance, coolant conditioner has been used among other things. A trip to the dealer would be a good idea if you were to pursue this idea.

I wouldn't kick a dead hog in the a$$ for the Atlas-Chalmers, Farmall or Ford. John Deere is the only way to go, nuff said.

White 2-135 or 2-155. That fits within your budget, and your needs. Price will fall under your limit as well.

lots of options for you. here are some of the ones id look at:

white: 140, 145, 160, 2-135, 2-155
jd: 4440, 4455, 4240, -sometimes these bring over 20k though.
ih: 5088, 5288

dont know much about the fords.

As far as price goes the White 2-1XX, JD 4240, and the IH models listed are the only ones that will come in at 20K or below, at least around here.
As my previous post indicated I would research the maintenance history of anything under consideration as for the age of any one of them they probably are not "bulletproof."
The thing that bothers me with the IH "88" series is the limited history of production and the impact on parts. I just don't see them around the die-hard IH guys. I am not saying they are terrible but there are a lot of questions to be asked.
It will be easier to find a good articulate with 3 point and PTO for under 20K than a row crop with MFWD. If you don't want to look at Deere then look at Case or White.
