Story around the neighborhood this morning.Got an elderly couple lives a couple roads over that supplements their SS by pickin' up cans and bottles. You see 'em out on the road all the time. Well known to everybody in this end of the county. Good citizens, they also pick up trash and litter as they go along. Young new hotshot deputy sheriff pulled 'em over yesterday for failing to signal a turn. They had the trunk and back seat of their car full of bagged cans and bottles on their way to the redemption center. The law allows for open alcohol containers in a vehicle only if they are behind the last forward facing seat (read "trunk of a car" or "bed of a pickup"). This guy poked around in the bags until he found a beer can with a little left in it and wrote them up for having an open container, but only after he got really thorough and put the husband through a battery of field sobriety tests. Out of control. Nobody's ever heard of this deputy, so there's hope that he's probationary. If all the folks that are upset about this were to call up the sheriff like they say they're going to, I got an idea this drone will either develop some discretion or fail his probation. |

| That Clint Eastwood/Barney Fife hybrid is a disgusting outrage. Here's to a short career, and may he discover his true calling in a vocation that requires no interaction with others. |

| I wonder if you somebody could contact INSIDE EDITION or some show like that and get nationwide attention drawn to this case. It wouldn't be much, but I'd chip a few bucks to help pay the fine. |

| Don't just call the Sheriff, write to the newspaper and show up in court. |

| | Ayuh. Paper's already in on it. The outrage is such that ther's already an appeal for $$$ to get them a lawyer. These are NOT folks that drive down the road swillin' beer and tossin' the cans into the back seat. Bouncer will recall a post I made last fall expressin' admiration for the way a state trooper approachin' me with all the caution that his job unfortunately requires, making honest inquiry into whether there was a problem. Only problem I had was waiting for traffic to clear so I could back a trailer into a driveway (there was a nasty hilltop just ahead of me), and the only remaining impediment was his cruiser pulled up on the tail end of my trailer. He stopped traffic for me, I got backed in uneventfully, we dipped our lights to each other, and he was on his way. Had it been one of our county mounties, it would have been a whole different scenario. I'd have been out in the road producing paperwork and being asked if I objected to a search of my vehicle for having the temerity to want to back into a driveway. Departments have attitudes the same as individual patrol officers, and our Sheriff's department's reputation is not good. The yahoo in this case took his department's attitude to an unfortunate extreme. Whether he pays a price, or whether the other deputies learn anything from it remains to be seen. I'm not countin' any chickens. |

| | As I've said for years, some folks only pin on the badge because it allows them to legally be a bully. While I certainly believe there are good cops out there--and I know a lot of good ones--it seems to me that they are definitely in the minority. That's why, whenever I'm stopped by an officer, whether driving or walking, I always raise my hands and say loudly, so any potential witnesses might hear, "I AM NOT RESISTING ARREST. I AM KEEPING MY HANDS IN PLAIN SIGHT." So far, it's kept me alive. And when they ask,"Do you know why I stopped you?" I always reply, "Because you apparently found "probable cause" to do so." |

| Beyond rediculous! Just to think some officers wonder why they get no respect. |

| We had cops here that were stupid in that respect. I always gave the elderly a hand if needed. I never arrested an old person on a traffic warrant. Told them to take care of it. Even called their 40 year old kids and chewed them out. Makes me mad as hell when a rookie cop does this. It makes you wonder who his field training officer was. Hey pal, why don't you go pick on a burglar or something. I bet those old people SEE a lot in their travels to pick up cans. |
