What kind of "proof" does the NYS DMV need that you're going to use a trailer "predominantly ... in farm production", to get the sales tax exemption? My "new" 7-ton deckover trailer will be used primarily by Dad for farm stuff, but I want to keep it registered in my name at my permanent (not the farm) address. Knowing the way the NYS DMV operates, they're not going to take my word for it. [Reply]   [No Email]

Louisiana trailers. Personal use. $10/yr, Permanent $70. Farm $3/yr. One page form that states you will use it predominantly for farm use, sign below... First off, 9 times out of 10 it will be Dad using the trailer for farm business. That qualifies as "predominantly for farm use" per the tax exempt form. I still want it registered in my name. Second off, I never said where it would be stored. The DMV makes no distinction about where the trailer is stored, only how it is USED. NY is out of control with taxes and fees and paperwork. There's always a catch. I have four trailers now to keep registered and it's going to cost me a fortune come January. Judging by what I pay for my 7000lb GVWR enclosed trailer ($69), the 7-ton's gonna be over $100 per year in NY. [Reply]  [No Email]

So far law enforcement types seem to look the other way on trailers, but with all the budget woes the state seems to have, that could change. Its all about revenue. [Reply]  [No Email]

Never had any problem, they are the nicest people to ever deal with even when I kept losing the registration cert. $153.00 for 5 years speaks well too. Not farm. just personal use. All I had to do was fill out and sign the form for ag sales tax exemption just like for a pickup truck. They seemed annoyed but legally they had to exempt it. They did insist on a seperate insurance card for the trailer even though my insurer said it was automatically covered by the policy on the tow vehicle. I went and got a seperate commercial policy on the trailer that costs me around $45 a year. After the hastle (and extra expense) they gave me I can see why many people register their trailers in Maine. [Reply]  [No Email]
massey333 09-24-2011 14:10:34 216.255.61.124 Report to Moderator	Re: NY DMV agricultural sales tax exemption on trailers in reply to low budget, 09-20-2011 09:31:16   low budget and others,if you are pulling a trailer that meets certain criterion,then DON"T trust your Ins.agents answer.Your trailer has to have its own liabilty Ins.coverage,(Ins.Co.rules,not states)because they are excluded from the towing vehicles coverage.Don't take my word for it,MAKE YOUR Agent clear with his underwriter for sure.I have 6 trailers and have to have seperate Ins.on 4 of them.Most agents don't know this and will tell you not to worry,but they are wrong.Hope this maybe helps someone.
