I put a warn 8000lb winch on my trailer. I do not use trailer very much so I was wondering could I just build a heavy pair of long jumper cables to hook to truck battery when using winch .Could I just run hot cable to winch and ground winch to trailer? What size wire to run length of F250

Just seen were you ask a question.

Pert near the same set up on the back, I use chain binders to pull it tight from the back then use the winch but not to pull it tight

I took a marine battery box with a top on it. This top has 12 volt switches on it. Attached it to the front of trailer. Now the winch hooks up to battery in that box and my extra lights also work from the 12 volt switches. My winch is a Ramsey Winch made down in Olk.
So this keeps me from running down my truck battrie so it starts. But I can hook up the trailer lights to truck and that battery gets charged also.
If I want to load something smaller then a big tractor and the trailer is not hooked up to truck. I can still use the winch and lights for loading till I am ready to hook up truck. Works great.

This is my belief,,, if you can afford a nice winch you can afford a nice battery to operate it,,, I know the day will come when I wish I had the best of both worlds ,,, good set of leads that will reach the truck battery,,, if all you are gonna do is load a non runner that will roll you mite git by,,, you will know if the winch does need its own battery,,, don't push the issue stop and let it cool,,, same as yer starter motor yer winch motor taint bulletproof,,, use your judgment

8' of #2 gage welding cable was $50 last summer. The longer the run, the heavier the cable would need to be. What about a battery isolation kit for an RV to charge the trailer/winch battery?

Why not keep it simple? in reply to jc newton, 01-21-2009 18:38:15
Why not keep it simple? Take a 12VDC battery the same group size as your truck battery, put it in a battery box, keep it inside your cab or secured in your bed, carry a set of regular jumper cables. That way you have a spare battery for your truck along with a portable battery source for your winch.

If you truck is diesel use one battery for the winch. Just reinstall it in the fall. One battery would be plenty in summer time.

I can't remember the name of the company but look up truck acc,or jumper cables they make a kit for jump starting a vehicle that hard wires to your batt and plugs in where ever you mount the connection it uses the same plug as a fork lift charger with jumper cables on the other end you just plug in when needed and you don't have to mess up the post on your batt. you could get two of the forklift style plugs to hook up your winch

Tractor supply store has a battery lead with the plug on one end that ataches to the battery and one end to the winch, 20 feet of electic cable a blue connector ends for $100.00, plug and play, easy connectors.

If you want to get even fancier, you could put in a battery isolater and an auxiliary battery and route the wires to a second trailer wiring plug at the back of your truck. That way you won't ge discharging your engine battery when running the winch. You can also add a plug to the battery like the wreckers have and give jump starts without opening your hood. You can also give yourself a jump start if necessary.

You COULD get away with grounding through the trailer chassis, but might also run into problems. Hitches make notoriously bad grounds and if the ground through the hitch fails (not a far-fetched possibility if your trailer moves up and down on the hitch while taking on whatever load you're winching aboard), you'll be returning that current through the 12 or 10 ga ground wire in your pigtail and smoke it and possibly other wires around it and have a mess.

If you've got a set of cables long enough, why not just ground to the battery?

The better and more permanent solution, if you're going to be using it a lot, is to hardwire cables to your battery terminal and run them back to a coupler at the rear of the pickup. 1/0 ga would be excellent.

Link is to connectors of the type I'm thinking. They're common on tow trucks, but do try to find one with a cover. Warn sells something similar, as a cable with jumper clips on one end and a connector on the other, as well as a mating cable to run to the winch.

I went to the welding shop, and made a set of jumper cables from welder lead, they were # 1 or 0. this way if some one needs a jump I can just pull up in back of them, nice when trafic is heavy,,,they had real heavy clamps too
