Dodge 3/4 ton PU has 350000 miles suddenly doesn"t want to rev over about 2000rpm,sputters. Starts and runs ok up to that point but not much power. Local auto shop that does all our ragular service changed fuel filter but no real improvement. Before I spend a lot of money on an older truck with rust and dent issues, would some of you with Cummins experience have some advice? Thanks |

Is there a sock or pickup screen in the fuel tank pickup? I have a 12V in a Chevy, and mine had the same symptoms, dropped the tank, replaced the sock and back to running good.

There's also a screen on the liftpump that you might want to clean. You can go to Diesel Truck Resource for more help.It could of slipped time to along with a few other things.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, guys. The weather is back up above zero again so we will get the truck back in the shop and check fuel pressure as a starting point. Most of you know I specified 12 valve because they switched to 24 mid year 1998. Thanks again and I'll post what is the diagnosis.

The 6BT was replaced with the Cummins ISX in 98.5, and I don't think the two were ever produced at the same time. Most 1998 model trucks I've seen have 12V engines. It is possible to put the 24V heads on a 6bt engine with some modifications.

Had a floater with a 6CTA in it that some jacka$$ thru Mini snickers bars in the fuel tank. The screen from the lift pump would plug constantly and the machine would act as you describe. Either screen plugged or lift pump going south. My 2 cents

Dodge[12valve] like Ford[7.3] should have stayed with the proven motor minus all the computer technology .The lift pump is the weak link.Best get it fixed as it will cause extra pressure on injection pump.

I'd check fuel pressure first. Between the filter and IP.

Have a diesel shop in the area do a fuel pressure test or you can add a fuel pressure gauge your self . It should read a steady 8 to 10psi at wide open throttle. Sounds like your lift pump is heading south. Get it checked SOON as if it is the problem it will take the pump on the cruise to, and the big money begins.

May want to check pump housing return pressure control bolt, if it opens too early will have low gallery pressure causing trouble you describe.

R.I.P.,,lol 350k miles, not bad,, if you want to keep it with out spending a lot of money, thats up to you.. you could check the exshust system to make sure not getting pluged up/back pressure causing engine rpm's to stay at low speed... can also go to dodgetruck.com and see if any one there has answers also..
