Briggs and Stratton engine size

On the old B&S flat head engine 8HP vertical shaft, I am going to have to replace it. What other HP are physically the same size.

I've found out most riding mowers have the same motor mount holes for different Hp.
So if it fits in place, use about anything.
I made a mutt riding mower. A mutt is a mower that you rob used parts off different
mowers to make one.
I replaced a 14 hp briggs OVH, with a 10 hp flat head tecumseh .
Replaced a 24 hp briggs with a 18 hp briggs.

If they fit, shaft length are the same, the motor mount holes should be the same. .

Reason I'm asking is I need a motor for a Ride King mower. It has pulley on top driving belt to the front wheel drive and pulley on bottom to drive blades. So the motor has to be the same height from mount to top where pulley goes or it won't line up. On bottom you have a little wiggle room since you can slide the pulley up and down on crankshaft.

I am thinking that with Briggs flat head engines, the 7 hp and the 8 hp. had the same basic size. When you go to the 10 and 11 hp blocks,
they are longer from the crank to the top of the head.

Unless you can find one that is new-old-stock, I don't think you will find anything else that will fit your Ride King.

Briggs does offer a 13 hp. overhead valve that is built on a similar block to your 8 hp. flat head, but it will be probably 3 or 4 inches
longer over the cylinder head than your original engine is. And since yours takes power from the flywheel end as well ad the bottom, you
would have to get creative mounting the pulley on the flywheel, because Briggs hasn't used the ball bearing recoil clutch in many years. (I
am assuming your Ride King is recoil start.)

A quick search reveals that a B & S 8HP engine is 18.6 ci or 305cc. Your model number first two digits will reveal that. However, all depends on what your putting a replacement on. Model and type often come into play.

(quoted from post at 08:57:00 11/23/21) The double pulley has been used for many years.

True, a double pulley has been used for years. However, he said his has a belt pulley on the top end of the crankshaft which belt drives the front wheel and a pulley under the motor for the blade belt. Not two pulleys, or a double pulley, on one end of the crankshaft.

A manual start and an electric start which should be similar to his:

Yep you got it, that is exactly what I have. Some had Tecumseh engine but so few of them it would be like hunting hens teeth.

Well it looks like an interesting challenge for sure. A look through B&S website shows many with +$300 price tag and surprisingly many sold out. It may be worth rebuilding/renewing. There is a man in VA with tons of OE parts. No website only email and phone. PM me if your interested. Will's what nots. He has a FB page.
