Bought a plasma cutter

What did you get?

You'll have fun with it! I've got an assorted set of compasses I've made. Just a piece of aluminum flat stock with a hole in each end, drill more holes as needed.

I don't know why I do it, but I tend to "white knuckle" it. Bad habit I guess, I have to force myself to relax and let it work.

I added a filter/trap to mine, plug it directly to the air connection going in. They don't like water.

Yes add a water filter. I bought a trap that is made for paint booths. It has a filter/desiccant canister just like an oil filter you change it when it is spent. Make sure you have lots of consumables on hand also. When I bought mine it only came with one set. The tip, nozzle and electrodes don't last all that long. You don't want to be in the middle of a project on a Saturday when you discover they are shot.

David I will second putting a water filter right on the unit. I also make templates out of 3/4 plywood to cut circles, oblong holes and etc. Great for making the holes for the rubber grommets for trailer/truck lights. My plasma head is exactly 1/2 from the side to the center of the hole. I used guides and templates the majority of the time for making good straight cuts.

For consumables look on Ebay. They are just copper pieces. Kbell Engineering, Pacific MO. 314-329-8553 sells them for about 50% of what Hypertherms cost. Example 10 nozzles for $25 and 5 inner electrodes for $16.

You will find you rarely use your torch after you get the Plasma cutter going.

I haven't had the need for one, yet, but am always interested. Does the piece need to be clean metal to cut, or will it cut through paint, rust, etc.?
