Bull leader pliers

What is the little appendage on the handle of the pliers used for? Thanks Mark

There'd be a rope with a knot at one end through the holes in the handle,pull it up tight then slip it in to that hook to hold them closed. Use the rope to lead them.

And--it would be a good idea to run the rope through a pipe to keep the bull from catching up to you---as he might not be real happy.
