Hello,

One side of this tree started to get brown. Found many of this critter hanging like a Christmas decoration. Some kind of worm?, had to cut the cocoon open. Pulled quite a few out. Hope I got them all. Here is what they look like,

Guido.

Indeed, they are bag worms. Only way to kill them now is by removing the bag and crushing them. Sprays will not penetrate the bag. Spray tree in the spring for the bugs before the bags are formed.

A good dose of Lorsban 4E will put a hurtin' on them now. Search the life cycle of bagworms for future control methods and timing.

Yep them there are BAG WORMS. Around here they say to spray Memorial Day. I use Malathion and it did the trick. I have 26 red cedars that line the drive way and property line. Not much you can do now BUT next spring get to spraying. Might have to do it twice.

There must be different types of bag worms because the one we have around here go for walnut and wild cherry trees. The ones we have here look like this.

They will all most strip all the leaves off a black walnut tree. We use to tie a torch to a long pole and dip in fuel and lite it and burn the bags.

Looks like the tree is an Alberta Spruce. I bought them because I thought a hardy tree from Alberta that would be strong . Then I found out it is a decorative landscaping tree that is really quite delicate and not some hardy species from Alberta. You better stop those worms now or you won't have any tree left.

Hello dr sportster,,

Canadian Dwarf Spruce it is, got plenty more around here. Some pics, the one affected is the one by the utility pole,

Bag Worms.

I get them when the butterfiles come through in the spring. The little pale green guy with the big yellow spot on it's wings is a carrier for sure.

I have 160 Junipers ( Cedars is the term used down here, several vareties) that protect my home from wind, noise, and used to be dust before they paved the county road in front of me. I like the Bayer brand multifunction pesticide in the blue quart bottle. HD and Lowes sell it for about 12 bucks. Mix 2 oz per gallon water. Made up a sprayer with a wand that will reach up to the 25ish tops of the trees. Just drive by on my lawnmower pulling a trailer with a 15 gallon tank on it, 60 psi pump, quality pencil spray pattern wand and that's it. If you don't get them they WILL multiply like rabbits and kill the tree.

Handy tip for everyone with bug problems in trees. I use the water/compressed air type of fire extinguisher to spray the trees. With a 100 psi you can easily reach a 30' tree.

Always sprayed them with gas right out ta the pump. Always got rid of them, never seemed to hurt any tree I sprayed.

Hello dr sportser,

Thanks, planted about 28 of those trees. Alberta dwarf spruce, then I started to trim and shaping them.
Its getting easier now as the shapes take form,

Guido.

Those look like the worms we get on Catalpa Trees and we call them Caltalpa Worms. I've seen trees almost totally covered in them. Perch bait? You bet.
