Bucket lift repower (pics)

Hi all!

I have a bucket truck which has an Onan gen set to power the hydraulics.

The set when running is really sweet ie. twin cylinder, 1800 rpm, very quiet but being 30 years old has become cranky and unreliable.

I have decided to change the gen set out for a new pull-start 10 hp Tecumseh single cylinder.

I chained one of the L-bars from my wheel lift wrecker to the forks on my electric forklift and used a web sling to attach to the gen set.

Please excuse the photos as they were taken in my shop which has three different types of lighting but I think you can get the idea.

As always comments pro and con are welcome and appreciated.

I will follow with photos of the fabrication of the new motor mounts and the engine install.

If I were you, I would rebuild the Onan or find anything else to replace it with. I would rather fight a finnicky 30 year old Onan than a new Tecrapseh anything. I won't own anything with a Techumseh engine on it.

Hey TG.

A Tecumseh engine would not be my first choice.

However I was able to buy this one for $119 from surplus center. It has a 1 5/8 output shaft and a cast iron sleeve and is a constant rpm generator motor.

As far as the hp the genset was 3000 watts or so I was told when I bought it and I figured that 10 hp was somewhere in the ballpark.

The Onan ran ok last time I coaxed it to life but the control and a/c wiring is an ancient rats nest of splices and patches.

I will probably sell it as is or build an enclosure for it and use as a stationary backup. It is amazingly heavy for what it is with a large extended cast iron crankcase.
