I'm thinking of cutting down the fleet of farm trucks and just keeping one(out of five) since i dont do much anymore. all of them are in various states of worn out. heres my choices(1) 99 silverado 3/4 ton,4x4,auto overdrive,6.something liter engine, been a fairly good truck but transmission starting to shift hard.(2) 89 gmc, four speed standard w/od,350 engine,4x4,3/4 ton, good truck but misses on one cyl since i blew and replaced head gaskets.( i suspect a collapsed lifter).(3) 79 ford 1/2 ton extended cab, plain old needs a new engine, good truck otherwise but no od so its a gas drinker.but good for hauling grandkids(4) 79 chevy swb 1/2 ton,new engine, transmission but needs lots of restoration work to make it pretty. (5) 92 ford wore out everywhere so not really in the running. any opinions? would use them mainly for hunting/fishing, light work, and occasionaly pulling a trailer with a small tractor. OR i could put a transmission in a ford escort wagon i have sitting here, get lots more mileage every day, use one of these old trucks as is if i need to, which would probably be the smart thing!LOL |

Keep the 99, and trade one of the others for transmission work on the 99. 4x4 is nice around the farm. When something else goes out, trade another older one for repair work, get rid of them over time. Scrap steel will hold its value better than the cash money you get from selling them.

I'm a Ford guy but out of that list I'd take the 89 GMC.

If it were me, I'd keep the 1999 Silverado. Good engine and transmission. If you hurt that transmission, I can't see the 700R4 in the 89 Chevy lasting very long. If you rebuild that transmission, you'll have a heck of a truck.

They are all money and time pits. If you like spending time working on vehicles rather than fishin huntin or playin pic you favorite and sell the rest. I only want to work on tractors dislike working on cars and trucks. have a nice day gobble

Out of that list, I'd keep the 89 GMC. 350/4 speed is a solid combination, minimal electronics to go bad, lotsa parts available.

i'm sure enough leaning that way. plain simple truck, and a new crate engine or long block would make it outlast me. none of these trucks are beat up really, just need some tlc i didnt have time to give them before. wife has been after me to buy a new one, but i dont need one and it would just be something for the kids to fight over.

I'd get rid of them all and find something different all together that doesn't need so much major repairs done.

thought of that also, but for the first time in 60 years i'm out of debt and just cant see spending more on a new vehicle than i did my house!LOL But your right, these probably need to be scrap iron. Sold a couple this last week that were in even worst shape. Thought i might keep one for work, and give the rest to the kids/grandkids. Let them tag and insure them, and they might not call when they need something moved. Would be good trucks for running to the lumber yard and back,or city folks hauling lawnmowers and trash. Got a new handicapped eqquiped van for my wife and she doesnt drive anymore,so i truthfully could sell them all, but a redneck needs a truck around! sometimes a guy just needs to drive accross the pasture you know? Its good for your soul, and you dont need a new truck for that, you need a old beater. sagebrush and mesquite gives them character.Stop in the creek crossing and throw a feedbucket full of water on the windshield to wash it. Drag a nastly bloody deer carcass or two in the back, or a newborn calf in the front seat. Thats my kind of truck, one you dont mind USING. One to drive to town or down the hyway is a different vehicle.all i need to do is figure out which i want to fix, while I'm still able.and get it reliable enough i dont worry about walking.

You and I have the same idea of what a good truck is. Not into the fancy leather seated things myself.

You can sell them all and buy 1 good used one with the money from the rest and then you won't have to put out any extra cash unless you want to.
