Thinking about getting a crossbow for hunting whitetails here in Ohio next year. Who is a good maker? I know the name Horton, but are you just paying for the name? How heavy a draw for whitetail? Thanks for the help

I have a Parker, compound crossbow. It has a cranking mechanism to cock it. I am not real fond of it. It works fine, but it is bulky and heavy and pretty much of a one shot deal.

I bought it when I had shoulder and tendon surgery.

I have sense bought a standard compound bow, a lightweight Mathews. Much lighter than the crossbow, more convenient and I can slip in a second arrow and get off another shot in seconds if need be.

And really, the range of a crossbow is not much better than a regular bow.

Not quite on the subject, but I always thought a crossbow would be a helluva weapon for guerilla warfare.

You could sneak around and take out enemy sentries (and others) and there would be no way they could pinpoint your location.

Unless someone else saw which way the guy you got was facing- then they know a general direction- and that you are CLOSE!

Crossbows were used some in Viet Nam as you suggested- but it more of a lack of silenced firearm or any other fire arm for everybody in squad situation. Some pictures maybe of a Huey that got stuck with a VERY large crossbow bolt 1969- A brother in 7th calvary/1st Airmobile said it happened a couple times, best LZ for attack got covered by whatever Charly could get. Have you ever shot a crossbow??? If not maybe you should. They make a loud noise the moment you pull the trigger or at least the ones I have owned or handle all did so yes you could be pin pointed pretty easy plus they are hard as heck to cock unless your a big very fit man. I have problems cocking mine and that is with a rope asset

Due to being disabled I hunt with a Barnett Quad-300 and have been for well over a decade. I have bagged many a deer with it and the scope that came with it when new. I am more then happy with it other then of course they now make better ones but that is part of life and they always improve stuff. Payed $500 for it when I got it but at that time it was top of the line from Brass Pro shops

About a 250 pound draw on a compound would be good. make sure the Ohio laws allow crossbows- some don"t unless you"re "disabled/handicapped" like missing a hand or bad shoulder for using a regular bow like a couple people I met. Wisconsin was restricted that way couple years back- was being proposed to let Crossbows and couple other thing in for regular bow season. RN
