I've tried 7 but just don't like it. 98 to XP was an easy step up, but I'm not going to give up something so good as XP. If you must upgrade, stay with 7. Every new OS has it's quirks, and 7 has them worked out now. I don't think 7 ever had too many terrible problems, because it had a really good trial run.(Vista) [Reply]  [No Email]

Like anything else it takes some getting used to. Boot times are great with solid state HD I agree that it would be better with touch screens like tablets but overall i like it. So far no compatibility problems with the programs I run, but I don't have everything loaded yet either [Reply]  [No Email]

I looks different, but works well. The first thing you'll see are live tiles on the start screen. Depending on what app the tile is for you can have information updating live: weather, stocks, email, sports, news, etc.. Click on a tile (app) to open it full screen. The tiles (apps) are run in a sandbox ("In computer security, a sandbox is a security mechanism for separating running programs." from Wikipedia) You can open a desktop screen that will look familiar with normal icons. IE 10 is the installed browser but you can add other browsers if you choose. I wish I had a touch monitor, but I just have the normal keyboard and mouse. I suggest you go to a store and play around with Win 8. I had Windows 7 and Windows 8 User Preview dual booting until I installed a new SSD. Computer support guy at work and a computer sales guy told me to stay away from Windows 8 until they get the bugs worked out (there always seems to be some with new operating systerms). I use it in a home office, and I've had so many problems trying to access and down load our company's software, I gave up and am again using my old 'puter with XP and IE8. The problems seem to involve IE9. I tried to download IE8 on the new unit and it wouldn't accept it. However, neither IE9, Firefox, or Google Chrome will install company software to diagram houses and commercial buildings. Without that, I'm dead in the water for doing my job. I have an email in to our company's techies, and haven't heard back. The manufacturer's techies want to charge me to sort it out since it's apparently in the company software and not the computer. I bought my wife an identical one at the same time, and she's getting along great. But, all she uses hers for is for email and to surf the 'Net, she doesn't have to use the business software I do. I get the impression that whoever designed Windows 7 thinks everyone who owns a computer spends 95% of their time playing video games, watching movies, and listening to music. All I want is a workhorse computer that will efficiently do what I need to to do my job. [Reply]  [No Email]

With that said, Windows 8 is a somewhat touchy-feely type of OS that seems to copy what is on the newest smart phones.
