I got a Stihl 028 AV Super at an auction yesterday for about $80. It is in good shape from what I can see but I can't get it to run. It has fired briefly a few times but never for more than a couple of seconds. I have had the plug out and cleaned it, removed and checked the gas line and fuel pickup, cleaned the air filter and set the carb adjustment screws to the settings marked on the cover. Any diagnostic advice will be much appreciated. It doechs seem to have good compression. It has likely been sitting for a year or two or more.

Check the muffler. I had a mad customer bring me a saw for parts. Said it wouldn't run and was trash. Pulled the muffler screen fired right up. Cleaned the screen and gave it back to him. He left a very happy man.

Chances are the ignition is fine. It's likely just gummed up int he carb and needs fuel lines. A carb kit, filter and new lines will probably do the trick. If that's too much hassle, send it to me, I like 028's.

Is your's one of those that has two ports, one for the choke, and a second for the 'regular' intake? If so I've seen several of them here lately that simply won't run. The only one I ever got to run I found the fuel line from the tank to the carb was cracked so I replaced it. It ran fine for a day or so then went right back to it's antics. Since my buddy has brought it back to me a couple of times. I know the fuel like is good, it has good fire, it has a new plug, basically everything is new but the saw.......Still it doesn't run more than it does.

If you ask me Sthil used to make a really good saw but when they went to the whole deal with the two intake holes, they really screwed up royally.........The only thing they made good there was a good boat anchor........

I have a 029 Super That gave me the same problem. I found a very small crack in the fuel pickup line. I too had looked at the fuel line once but upon further examination I found the crack. The line is a little pricey.

Check the kill switch.I've had problems on their chain saws and concrete saws with the wire coming loose and touching the ground strip.

take the muffler off & see if it will run w/o it. Clogged muffler screens often make 'em act like that. Next check for spark by pulling plug out & laying it on top of the cylinder. Pull the cord & watch for spark at the plug electrode. If neither of those is the problem then its a fuel line or carb problem.

I give my saw a little shot of starting fluid to see if it will fire. I drain the tank when not in use then run the saw until it quits. If it has weak fire to the plug I would check the magnets if it has them for magnetism using a flatblade screwdriver. Hal

Try new spark plug. Carb may be gummed up if it's been sitting that long.
