this will prob catch some flak,, I repaired one on a ac plow that the moldboard was completly broke off on, clamped it in place with a bit of a gap turned up the mig welder and went to welding, yes i said mig,, it has held just fine for all the use its been through and has been wearing good also.

I have welded a cracked moldboard (full lenght vert.)with 7018 and it welded good and worked out good.

I used 7018 to build up my worn spots on my moldboards on my 720 and it wears good. Any time I see wear, I give a touch up.

I have welded cracked and broken moldboards with regular 7018 rods. I just vee the crack out and preheat with a torch. I then also slow cool it as well. I have not had any problems with the ones I have done.

I repaired and old John Deere plow that had the mold boards washed out in the shin area. No shins on this plow. I torched out the sections, torched out patches from mold boards I had around and used my old stand by (7018). I built it up well on both sides and ground it back smooth.

I'd use a 312 stainless rod. Most of the specialty rod suppliers in welding supplies have displays with small packages of specialty rods. Get the ones that are recommended for welding spring steel, tool steel, difficult to weld steel or unknown types of steel. Those will be similar to a 312 stainless.

For the hardfacing check the Stoody site but you need something mostly for abrasion unless you have lots of rocks. Then you want something with a little more impact strength. I'd guess something like a Stoody 35 would work fine.

We did a weld on a Ferguson plow years ago and I V the crack and used Ni-Rod on it and it has held now for well over a decade
