about 5-6 years ago I bought a Schumacher 1200 electronic battery charger(was on clearance and did ok) last week my son used it to charge his dead battery (dome light left on) when he started the car he unhooked the cables and closed the hood, (left it on the ground and ran it over) so now I need a good battery charger. I have a tractor that takes 6v battery, all else are 12v. I have some gel batteries (hospital bed batteries, used but free) I use for different things that need charging every couple months.
Some of the tractor batteries are 8-10 years old, recharge in the spring, keep in basement in winter. So the charger must have helped.

I ordered a Schumacher SC-10030A thru amazon (It had good reviews and tested well) but it arrived DOA (Sent e-mail and got a refund within 1 day) I was thinking is there a good charger for farm use that is not too much money? any suggestions?

thanks Paul

Whatever kind you get, get one with either a timer on it or an auto shut off when the battery is fully charged. I've boiled more than a few over when I forget to shut it off.

FWIW- Schumacher has been good by me.

I bought an old Schumaker off ebay last year for my 6 volt tractor. The older ones were very durable. I think I paid $20.00 plus shipping.

i like the dumb chargers that are 6v/12v and something like 2/10/50

ie.. trickle, or heavy charge.. or start boost.

harbor freight has them in the 30$ range when on sale usually.

good BASIC charger. hard to go wrong with a metal box, transformer, 2 switches, 2 diodes and a ckt breaker bulb...

I've read reviews on Schumacker battery chargers on the market now - most customers said that they are now junk.

I had a Schumacker that I bought about 25 years ago. I used it 3-4 times and it sat on the shelf unused to about 15 times. Decided that I didn't need it very bad so I sent it to my nephew on the farm in ND. He used it more in 3 months than I did in 25 years. It is a good charger. If you can find a used one made many years ago, you will be more satified with it than with a new one.

My best charger is a Century from Sam's, but I doubt they have them anymore, I think they buy a trainload of whatever they can get cheep and when there gone there gone! Its 6&12V, 2, 15 and 100A boost.

Tell your son you will pay half and he should get you A Schumacher SE 3010 Fram and Ranch. It's 6v and 12 v and has 200 amp start feature also.
