Finally test ran the Supermax Mill I bought several months back. I hadn't been able to run it because my existing phase converter didn't have the capacity to handle the main spindle motors.

So, I bought a brand new, TECO Westinghouse motor about a month and a half ago that was a special order, special frame that was bought for a job and not used. The company selling it wanted it out of their way so I got it cheap. Then, yesterday, Dad gave me several well pump control panels that the company he works for had removed from service for various reasons. They had all of the contactors and capacitors I needed to get my phase converter going.

Right now everything is just setting in the floor, and temporarily wired for test purposes, but when I'm done everything will be neatly packaged, and safely wired, so I can finally get the mill truely operational, and making money for me.

That said, anybody got any surplus CAT 40, or #40 NST tooling they want to sell, or know where any is? I'd really like to get it adapted to R8 for the time being as I think I can come up with some tooling to fit the R8 relatively easily, and I imagine alot cheaper than the #40 tapered tool holders. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Wayne

Thanks for the link, there really is alot of good info on the different tapers all in one place. Looks like the major/only difference in the CAT 40 vs the NST 40 is the length of the toolholder past the taper. The CAT 40 stuff ends at the small part of the taper and in many cases has a knob for a quick lock while the NST 40 has a round piece that sticks up past the end of the taper, with threads to catch a manual, threaded pull rod.

Too, maybe with this info I'll be able to figure out the taper in the spindle on my old Southbend lathe. I know it's all in the Machinist handbook too, but I hadn't bothered to look it up yet but I've been told that the Southbend tapers were odd so I guess I'll just have to check and see.

Hey Wayne, Good luck with the mill! Don't know about down there but here in the rust belt there are many used machine tool dealers. Each one of them has dump truck loads of used tooling. Just remember that when they want X your first counter offer is half that. Some I have purchsed from are Yoder machinery near Holland OH and Industrial Machinery Co in Columbus. Also go to Ebay and punch in your needs. I have had good luck there by watching auctions and making offers on tooling that doesn't sell. You shouldn't pay a whole lot of money for used tool holders in Cat 40 or R-8. Not sure about 40NST

Thanks for the dealer suggestions, I'll look them up. I've been watching places like HGR Surplus, and a couple of the Government surplus sites, in fact I got the mill off the NC State surplus site, and have seen only one listing so far. The problem with it was that there were like 100 tool holders they put them all in two lots, which wasn't bad. The thing is each lot consisted of say 10 of one size, 5 of another, 4 of another, etc. In other words you got multiple, multiple sizes of each holder instead of the whole group being broken into multiple complete sets. If you considered the set price they went cheap enough, but as a lot I wasn't going to pay that much to have 90 extra tools I didn't need and don't have time to sell myself. Guess that was basically the same thinking they used when putting the auction together. You might get $100 less for the big lots but save $200 in time messing not having to mess with 10 lots vs 2 lots.

As far as the CAT 40 vs NST 40, best I can tell comparing them side by side, they will both fit. The only difference I can see is the CAT 40 has a metric thread for the puller bar, and the NST 40 has a standard thread.
