Are there any clothes dryer manufacturers that make a 110vac unit. I of course mean that the heating element runs off of a 110v line. I have a 220 VAC unit now, but it will not run off of my portable generator. That's why I am asking. |

| | One option for running 240 volt loads off a 120V generator is to use a transformer. For many years I ran my submersible pump off an old US Army Signal Corps generator using a 1500 VA autotransformer. But I suspect in your case your generator doesn't come close to having enough power to operate a typical clothes dryer. And a transformer big enough for the job will be several hundred bucks. Simplest answer is to break out the wallet, trade in your generator for a 6500 watt model and add a transfer switch. You will make momma very happy when she finds she can have power to the whole house during an outage without running extension cords all over the place. Now, even if you can find a 120 volt dryer, you're not going to be happy with it for everyday use. Which means you'll end up with two dryers. If you agree with this conclusion, then a cheaper and better solution is to pick up a used dryer for 100 bucks, convert to propane if necessary (30 bucks), then hook it up to a barbecue tank. |

| If the 240V 4800W electric dryer was wired to 120V across the heating element and 120V across the motor/controls. A pretty modest 1800W, 120V generator would operate the dryer. If we had George on hand he could experiment with capacitors and compensate for the motor's reactive current. May get by with a 1500 to 1600W generator. |

Electric clothes dryers, 110VAC?...yes in reply to Wile E, 08-15-2012 13:18:04

| Your every day 240V, 4800W electric clothes dryers can both spin the motor and energize heater with 1200W on 120V. Slower on 120V than 240V but will work just fine. |

| | Don"t know of a stand alone dryer, but these combo washer/dryer units marketed for apartments, RV"s, small spaces, etc. only require 110. Don"t need a vent either, condenses the moisture out and pumps it down the drain. I think they spin the heck out of the load to start drying it. Kirk |

| If you find one see how many watts it draws, probably a lot. You generator might still not be enough. |
