I am wanting to buy another floor jack. I have a 3 ton Craftsman and it is ok. I am wanting another one. Mine is a wide base with a large cup but it is a short one. I would like a low profile and 3 ton or better and large cup and a long one. Got any suggestions for me? Please remember I have kids (so I have a budget) and I don't have a shop so it is used just once in a while.

I second the Costco suggestion. I don't think you can get a better jack for the $150.00 price that they are asking. I almost bought one for our shop Monday.

Brett, Low profile, budget and 3 ton...good luck, they don't exist. Sad to say, most things are made in china, I don't care what name you have on them.

Who would crawl under a car that is supported by a jack in the first place? That's crazy, I don't care where or who made the jack, I use jack stands before I go under anything.

I can't live with just one jack.
I have 4 floor jacks, 2 are aluminum 2 ton low profile racing jacks at $169 each and two 3 ton regular metal jacks at $69 each. The low profile ones are good to get under things that have a flat tire or little room, however, they don't have the lift of a regular jack. The older you get, the more you like the aluminum jacks because they are easyier to put in the back of the truck.

I hate to admit that I bought all my jacks at Harbor Freight and got them when they were on sale. I've never had the first problem with these jacks and returning anything to HF isn't a problem, as long as you have your receipt.

George

I wouldn't get under a vehicle either. We use jackstands also.

Brett I just checked with an old supplier of mine, you can buy a PROFESSIONAL jack that most tire shops use for around 200.00, will last you a life time, not the mickey mouse stuff the box stores sell. We tryd the 57.00 jacks they did not last 1 day. Go on the internet and look up someone selling tire supplies in your area. Most will be happy to deliever when their truck is in your area.

In the 1970's I moonlighted fixing hydraulic
jacks. this is my opinion: The ones that were the
worst to fix were Walker, their valves like most
jacks, were spring loaded ball bearings...but the
Walker bodies were soft, and the balls pounded
the seats, and the jacks wouldn't hold.4 out of 10 walkers couldn't be fixed.(Well, they could have been fixed by remachining the valve seats, but who, beyond the factory, could do that?)
Todays "Lincoln" brand, are just Walkers, also
sold as NAPA's. I myself would be leary of them!
Most Chinese jacks are not designed to be fixed.
When they quit, you throw them away. I once spent
several hours on the phone trying to track down
Chinese jack parts..I finally reached an importer
in LosAngeles, who told me..."Look buddy, I'm in
the business of selling jacks..NOT PARTS!")
Most of the chain stores..Sears, wallys, kmart
are selling chinese jacks. Is it worth your life
to crawl under a machine/vehicle jacked up with
a Chinese jack?
Finally, the best, in my opinion. was Hein-Werner
but the import makers, paying .25 cents per hour
drove an American Union shop out of business.
The name has come back, probably as a decal on a
forign made product...back away if it says "made
in China". Lastly...a GOOD jack is not a cheap
jack.. expect to pay $200 for a lifetime invest-
ment...Not $39.95

I do hydraulic repair for a living. The new Hein-werner jacks are just walker-lincolns with a H-W sticker on them. In my opinion walker- lincoln made one of the best jacks. As far as Napa professional jacks go they are made in China also, but do carry a two year warranty.

Agree Hein-Werner probably the best. Had several rebuilt probably 25 year's ago by a local repairman and are still going strong today. Could have bought new cheap jacks for less money than the repairs, but the repairs were well worth it. Repairman told me that probably one of the biggest mistakes people make is to tighten the valve down to tight and ruin the seat, just snug good till they hold.

Costco is selling Arcon 4.25 ton jacks; it is a better jack than the one that Sam's Club is selling. Check out the reviews on both.

CORRECTION: The Arcon jack that Costco is selling is a 3.25 ton jack, not a 4.25 ton as in my other post.

I have gone the cheap new route, and the old, good quality used route, and have been happier by far with the old good used ones. Names like Lincoln, Milwaukee, Walker or Hein Werner. Keep an eye on Craigslist, the show up there often, and pretty reasonable usually. Auctions are pretty hit and miss, usually end up selling pretty high.

Some of these import jacks are pretty flimsy, and the ratings they give them are pretty optimistic.

I've got an ancient BlackHawk. Ugly as sin and I paid way more than I should have at an auction, but it does everything I need it to do and it will do it over and over and over again. Easiest way I have found to raise the old M so the wheels can be slid in or out.

I've got one from Sam's Club. Had it for several years and never had a problem. Was about 57.00 at the time. I think it is Michelin brand.

I wonder if it is still available? Goes to show you, you don't have to buy the most expensive.
