I am still running Windows XP. I have Norton 360 for virus protection. My computer gets real slow at times. It is real bad if you have to leave and leave IE on. When the computer tries to wake back up it is real slow. Some times closing the IE and logging back in will make it work again. Other times you have to completely restart the computer. When I close my email and get redirected to Yahoo's home page it will just about lock my computer up as well.

When I go into the Task-manager there is a program called: ccsvchst.exe , running. It will just keep building the file size until the computer locks up. At times it may be using 75% of the CPU. The only way to stop it is to restart the computer.

I have done Goggle searches on this and found out others are having this issue as well. I have not found any good solution to the problem. I did find several people that had used a registry clean up program call: Speedy PC Pro. They said it helped them out. So I looked into the program and did the free down load. It says it found several hundred registry problems with my computer. The kicker is the so called free program just find the "problems" you have to buy the program to actually get it to fix anything.

I research this program on the net and am more confused than before. I am finding many sites/reviews that say the Speedy PC pro programs is top rated. Then I find a bunch of reviews that say it is just snake oil and does nothing. Real bad experiences trying to get their money back and such.

So have any of you used this program??? Even better have any of you had the ccsvchst.exe problem and found a fix??? I am really getting frustrated with the whole thing.

microsoft security essentials is a good anti-virus and works good. it is free, has free updates, not a resource hog, it is by microsoft. I have it on three computers and have not had any problems. find it here, look under security and updates

Just yesterday I think I got suckered into something I don't need. Still not sure though. I bought software called Regcurepro. $30.

You have to call a number to have it installed by a tech. I called the number and let the tech have control of my screen. He ran the software and found that I have registry problems. I was able to see what he was talking about. He recommended that I take the computer to an authorized/certified Microsoft service dept. to have it fixed. Price is about $250 at Bestbuy. I am going to have my BIL look at it. I was able to find all the registry problems on my own today so maybe I was had.

I have installed Linux Mint right next to the XP on a couple computers and couldn't be happier. OK, I will be happier once I get rid of the XP.

Linux is great! It is quick and easy to use. I don't use alot of programs so it works well for me.

Make sure you remove the Norton program completely from your computer. It will run in the background even if you disable it and it will still slow you down

I use Avast antivirus also. It's free and it updates itself. The only time you really have to fool with it is once a year when the new version comes out and you have to install that yourself. Norton is the cause of so many problems that I can't understand how they even manage to sell that junk.

Re: Computer Issue!!!! in reply to JDseller, 07-22-2012 19:33:40
The quickest and probably least expensive fix is adding memory to your computer.

The problem IMHO ia that due to the price of memory the software authors can add huge amounts of cool looking whirlygigs and the such that have nothing to do with the function of the software.

It is kinda like starting with a four bottom plow and mid field switching to an eight bottom plow. The hp you were using was just fine until much more was needed.

If you do a quick search for memory and upgrading memory you will find the info needed.

I have a 10 year old laptop that was choking on just about every function online and installing the maximum memory made it run probably 5 times faster. I believe the memory was $48.00 and the upgrade involved removing four screws and unclipping the old memory and clicking in the new memory. About as hard as replacing a distributor cap.

Hope this helps you. By the way I use avast antivirus.

Brad

Was going to post earlier on this but am no expert and kept quiet. Since others have had same experiance as me I will state that I had same problems and ditched Norton and loaded AVG freeware which I have no issues with.

JD Seller,

Totally agree with Allan in NE. My brother is a computer technology guy too - first thing he said was "get rid of that God awful Norton, it slows your computer down big time".

Also, my computer at work got really slow... almost crashed - we had a new hard drive installed (be sure to back up all your important files and photos to a flashdrive or an external hard drive first). Anyway, with the new hard drive my old work computer works great! And its operating system is XP. I think it cost us about $150 including parts and installation.

I make my living with computers.

First order of business is to update your java thru the control panel.

Secondly, dump that gwad-awful Norton. It cuts computer performance by 50%.

Then, quit downloading the junk from the Internet. All that quackary does is jam up the works and costs you performance.

Allan: What should I use for anti-virus??? I don't want the free stuff that you have to update all the time by yourself. I am not real handy on a computer and I may not be on my computer for days at a time. I don't mind having to pay for a good anti-virus and malware program. I want it to stay updated by itself and would prefer one program/company rather than 2-4 like all the computer nuts say they use.

My local computer guy wants me to use the Free stuff but it is a combination of four different programs. Then you have to update everyone of them manually. We tried that a few years ago and everyone of our computers got bugs in them. Two of them I just threw aways as they where not worth the cost to have him clean them up. It costs me $100-150 per computer every time one of them would get infected. I think many of the computer guys are making sure they have business by recommending the free junk to protect the computers.

Hi JD,

Try this. XP is gettin' a bit long in the tooth and will soon not be supported by Microsoft anymore....... Hence, the Java has to be updated by you.

I still like it tho and use it here also.

Here's a link. Ya have to completly uninstall your norton first.

I did away with Norton. It had slowed down my computer to a crawl. I now use AVAST. It's a free download.

Norton itself is so bad it is almost a virus. Some of these computer "clean up" programs are a scam, a few are effective because they put the virus or malware you're trying to remove there in the first place. Try getting Kaspersky or NOD-32 for your anti-virus they are both a little more aggressive and don't soak up as much memory. Even if you upgrade to a more effective anti-virus expect to still have problems with Norton it is not easily removed, lingers and comes back at the worst times, that and they'll remind you every five minutes your protection has lapsed. With computers you don't want the most popular browser or anti-virus, those are the ones the hackers work harder to get into, they figure more targets=more money, fame or chaos.

It has to do with your Norton, there was a good article on how to solve the problem here.
