I am going to add more bolt bins and want to try to stock them with USA made bolts. Went to Fastenal because somebody told me their bolts were tougher to break. I picked up a few bags to try, they seemed pretty good. The thing is all the bags said made in China. I was wondering where people on this board buy nuts and bolts?

Fastenal has everything, but is more expensive, a lot like ace hardware. I get mine from local TSC or Farm Fleet. You pay by the pound for each grade.

I normally buy bolts at my local industrial supply or TSC when their on sale. Gr.5 is 2.50/lb at the industrial supply and 3.80/lb at TSC. The industrial supply also has a much better selection. I don't know who makes bolts in the US but I know Infasco makes bolts in Canada and they're a good, high quality bolt.

I'm not sure if you can buy direct from them but there is a company that makes them close to me. Called Endries.

I buy most of my stuff from either the local Ace hardware or Fastenal.

I don't know about where exactly they are made, but over the past 15 years or so Dad and I always bought our bolts through industrial supply places like Barns Distrubition, and other industrial supply places. They put in the bins for us and kept them stocked. Everything we had through them was grade 8, and included a variety of bolt lengths, fine and coarse thread, as well as USS and SAE size washers. Doing mobile work on heavy equipment we also kept the trucks stocked out of the bins. We never had a problem with any of the fasteners we got through them. I will say though that before Barnes bought out KAR Products that KAR had THE BEST flat washers of any company I've ever dealt with, along with bolts with heads just a bit higher than standard, etc, etc. In other words their standard products were better than most places' 'top of the line' stuff. Don't know what happened to their products when Barnes bought them, but if available they are well worth the price if your using the fasteners in 'critical' places.

For special stuff that wasn't in the general items in the bins we always went through Mcmaster Carr, MSC, Fastenall, etc, etc. Again 99.9% of the time we used grade 8 fasteners and never had a problem out of any of them, regardless of where they were actually made. The other .001% of the time we were looking for things like grade 8 all thread for use with hydraulic pullers, grade 9 plus bolts for special applications, etc. On that note CAT also carries a line of bolts, that are made to their specs, that are usually on par with others grade 9 plus bolts.

Beyond that all I can say is that while I am all for "buy American" in todays world, unfortunately, it's more about getting a quality product, regardless of where it's made, than anything else.

I went to grade 8 on everything, from Tractor supply. For no more than I use expense is not an issue.

Fastenal does sell U.S.A. made fasteners..did you
specify American ? In fact, Fastenal has their
own plant at Winona, Minnesota, headquarters, and makes some of their own stuff there!

You may be able to get a list of bolt manufacturers somewhere, like SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) that will give you a chart of head markings that will identify whether the bolt manufacturer makes bolts certified to SAE standards.

During the 70's and 80's the U.S. was flooded with cheap counterfeit bolts that caused a lot of accidents that resulted in injury and death. Copngress passed a law making it illegal to manufacture and sell counterfeit bolts, but there was a lot of counterfeit bolts in the pipeline that are still being sold in the U.S.

If you are concerned, request a list so you can check the head marking (which will identify the manufacturer. If you have doubts, don't buy the bolts.

They have three different grades. You have to get the green ones for Gr 5 and gold ones for Gr 8.

Well, I went to the modern view to find out where you were located like DAVE2 said, but you didn't fill out your profile. So I went to IP look up and it said you are around Batavia. I am in NY to and there is no good place to buy bolts around here. Nobody handles bolts in 3 1/2" 4 1/2' etc. except Fastenal or Hiawatha Fasteners in Syr. So when I go to WIS. once a year to visit my son I have a list and go to the Mennonite down the road who has one of the best selections I have seen. Sells by the pound so they are affordable.

Son is in Curtiss near Abbotsford. Mennonite probably has a phone but I don't know the number.
