I have an 18 inch swing, 8 foot bed Sidney engine lathe, probably from 1940s. Quick change gears, not like my 1910 13 inch South Bend with change gears, so it"s quite an improvement. Interested in finding some books regarding controls, so I don"t inadvertently break something learning how to run it. I know I moved something to get the cross feed working, but now can"t get the long feed in both directions.

Found a site called "practical machinist", but of no help. Any other sites you know of regarding old machine tools? Also picked up a Milwaukee horiz mill with vertical attachment.

I don"t know the lay out of the engagement levers on a Sidney, but most laths have a three postion lever that the center position is neutral, the next position engages the cross feed, and the next position is the longatudional feed. If the cross feed is engaged you are locked out of the carriage feed. There should be a lever to engage a half nut for threading only and some sort of clutch system, either a knob or a lever to engage the carriage travel. Good luck on your machine.

I've had better luck with Home shop machinist and even better with Hobby machinist. Google the exact syntax. I'm afraid to ask a question on Practical machinist. Check out Yahoo user groups. They have different groups for different brands of lathes.

No surprise there. Buncha prima donnas. Did they yell at you or call you names because you asked a question?

Try home shop machinist. Better class of people.

if you get a chance, post a picture. I like seeing old machinery kept alive just as much as I like seeing old tractors saved.

Thanks a bunch NCWayne. I have been looking for a manual for my WW 1 vintage Monarch for years and refused to pay $600 plus that some one was asking. I downloaded what I needed just now.
