Bright idea #784.........

Got to thinking the other day. (I know, that alone is dangerous).

But, everyone is aware of the controversy over talking and texting on a cell phone while driving.

While using my GPS unit the other day, I tried to do something with it and got a pop-up message that info could not be entered while the car is in motion.

Got me to thinking, GPS units operate off of a satellite which senses then the unit is in motion. Cell phones also operate off of a satellite. Why couldn't cell phones be designed to sense when the user is in motion, as in a vehilce, and become inoperative if the phone is moving, say, 5 mph in relation to the satellite?

Provision would need to be made so a passenger could use the phone, but the idea is intriguing.

Cell phones for most part operate off of earth based towers. The higher end phones for extremely remote locations operate off of the Sats. Still I don't know why it wouldn't work though, shame people can't just use common sense with those things so Govt doesn't have to come up with MORE laws.

Might be a bit of an irritant to the passenger in the car who is using his phone, the passenger in a bus or on a train on a transcontinental trip, or a person on an ocean voyage.

Might be a few other exceptions, too.

What needs to happen is that those that can't walk and chew gum at the same time shouldn't do it. Those that can't talk on a cell and drive shouldn't do it. Those that can't hold a conversation with their passanger shouldn't do it. Those that can't drive a stick shift shouldn't do it. Those that can't pat their head and rub their tummies at the same time shouldn't do it. Basically if your not capable of doing something you simply shouldn't do it. The last thing we need is more forced regulation from our govermental nannies, regardless of how it's imposed.

Goose, Just got a 2011 Ford EDGE with the fancy Phone/Guidence,GPS/Radio/AC,Heat System all in one. Called SYNC System there are some operation that are not useable unless stopped as you said it is just there are some of the technologies that are not perfected to their fullest yet.

How about a cell phone that will only operate when brought into the proximity of actual functioning brain cells?

Cell phones don't work off satellites. They can only triangulate when 3 towers are in reception range at once. The can guess speed by the change in time of packet delivery but then you couldn't talk while on a bus or train or as a passenger or on speaker phone.

hat depends on how old your phone is.........modern phones have GPS (govt mandated) & receive position information directly from the GPS satellites. Much greater precision than cell tower triangulation methods. Big bro knows where you are

Having worked for 33 years in road construction, I've always thought there should be a common sense test that must be passed before a person is issued a driver's license. That would prevent other problems in addition to the cell phone "lost in space" drivers.

Boy, can anyone remember what life was like before cell phones? I can't recall ever having anything so important that I couldn't wait to get home or to work to make the call & if there was an accident on the highway, you just went to the nearest house for help in calling the authorities. Wife knew that it had to be an emergency to call me because we were military. Kinda seems like the more advanced we get, the more I wish for the days when we weren't. Just my thoughts, Keith

Since the general feeling is that it wouldn't be popular since a passenger couldn't use his phone, how about this- some kind of device that sends out a scrambling or jamming signal that won't let a phone work in about a 3 square foot area right behind the steering wheel? Could be mounted under the driver's seat maybe, allowing it to be added easily to any vehicle? Surely the technology is out there?

Yep, some of us probably would remove or disable
it, but your average 17 year old girl(for examble)
wouldn't likely be able to. And it would probably
be easy enough to have some kind of anti-tamper
technology- could even send a signal to somewhere
saying it's been disabled, but that'd add to the
cost...main thing is just being able via some kind
of seal or timer or something if it's been messed
with..."OK kid, if this thing shows to have EVER
been unhooked, you lose your phone priveleges for
a year".

Hmmmm...wonder if I shouldn't have talked to a
patent attorney before I put this idea up here???
Naw, if someone DID build something like this and
it saved just ONE life, it'd be worth it!
