I bought my 10 year old son a .22LR yesterday. There is a place in Michigan called Williams gun sight company. I took my son with me to pick it out. They had a Marlin .22 bolt action for $275, and a Savage bolt action for $195, I bought him the Savage. They also had a heavy barrel Ruger but my boy didnt like it. I chose the bolt action instead of the semi-auto, I dont want him to forget how many rounds are in the magazine and I end up with a hole in my ceiling/roof. I first went to Bass Pro shops and they were all out of .22 bolt action rifles.....What? The Savage I bought for him is a black composite stock with iron sights and it has the drilled and tapped holes for a scope. The prices of the rifles at Bass pro were quite high, a Marlin XLR in Stainless .30-30 was $700----Yikes! And a Mossberg lever action .30-30 was $400.....Going all the way to Bass Pro and not get a rifle, So I had to look at a few new rifles. Bass pro doesnt sell used guns that I know of. All my Winchester rifles I bought used were under $300. One advantage of the Mossberg lever over the Winchester is that the Mossberg has a rubber buttplate instead of a steel one like the Winchesters.

Cabela's has the Savage bolt, synthetic stock, with Simmons 4X32 scope on sale for 199.00. Available in 22LR or 17HMR. I bought the 17HMR last year at the same price and it came with a Bushnell 3X9.
The 17 is a tack driver for sure. Good luck with your son and Merry Christmas

What didn't he like about the heavy barrel Ruger,( just curious) friend has one in a semi, its a good performer.

I've tried a couple of late model savage bolt actions one in a .17 and the other in .308 tactical, both were the same model, very nice for the money I thought.

I was 12 before I got my first, believe it was a Remington, 22 single shot rifle AND BOY WAS I PROUD

Teaching a young son gun safety and responsibility is a great thing in my opinion even if the far lefties hate such talk lol

God Bless and Merry CHRISTmas

I have a Savage model 93 bolt action with clip magazine. In my opinion, a great rifle for the money. Mine is in 22WMR, and is my second one. The window got broken out of my truck and the first one stolen in western South Dakota about seven years ago. I'm sure your son will love his rifle.

It was probably too heavy for him. He's only 10.

I wish I had been exposed to guns and hunting at a younger age. Grandpa helped me with his 20 gauge going after some geese when I was around 14-15 but that was about it. I cleaned up dad's 30-06 when I was 20 and took right to it.

Ahhh, the first real rifle!! Good for you.

My first was at 10 also. BB gun was at 9. Both for christmas. Dad got me a Western Auto, Revelation 22LR semi-auto. It looks like a Marlin. 17 shot. Still have it. He traded an old octagon barrel 22 single shot lever action for it. The action was loose on it and he was afraid I would get hurt with it. Wow. 52 years ago.

You done good except for the way you worded it. Now a day's we have to buy them for ourselves & let the kids use them. I think I was 12 when Santa gave me a Sears 22 lr single shot. It was legal then. That's the same age my son was when he got to use the 22 Winchester I just happened to buy myself. For some reason I bought a Ruger 357 when my daughter turned 16 & she really enjoyed learning to use it. Teach him right.

That makes sense, would have to "grow" into it. I know the feeling, after hefting my M1A around, its almost comical to pick up a regular hunting rifle, or plinker like this old Marlin .22WMR. It's like driving a truck all day and getting into your car with auto trans and pushing in the clutch, grabbing for a shift lever LOL !

Just came from the gun shop this afternoon, Always wanted a Henry lever action. Got the last one, and they only went on sale this morning. $249.00

Ya Johnny Morse is proud of his stuff and has to have a way to pay for all them boats that sit at the factory and decay from sitting for so long.
O still have the 22 I got way back when I was around 9 or 10 a Sears bolt action repeater 7 shot clip and it was and has been a very good little gun I shot countless rabbits etc with it over the years

I bought my daughter a Savage bolt action .22 single shot youth model two years ago. Its a good little rifle, I like the acu trigger. She doesn't know it yet but she's getting a Henry Golden Boy .22 lever action this year for Christmas.

Just me but if I were buying a bolt action I'd have bought a .22WMR or a .17HMR. The ammo is more expensive but shooting it one aimed shot at a time slows down the usage and the power gives a person a few more options.

The Savage 93 series are pretty good rifles (I have two) but their magazine seems so cheap after handling my Marlin 882SS.

Regarding the Henry rifle for Christmas. Are you planning on adopting a boy? I am 51 but we can work around that. Nice gift Dad.

the savage is a good gun, I still have my first gun a remington fieldmaster pump 22, and it is still in good condition even if I have run brick after brick of ammo through it. your son will like it.

Yeah! Golden Boy? I was looking at the Henry website last night. Hard to justify buying one for my self... Sure want to though.
