Built a Tool

I needed to replace a few tool handles. Axe, Adze, and a Pick. I have Ash, so I took some old planks, oak bridge decking I had saved. Built myself a horse. Front legs pivot for uneven floors, no metal fasteners, maple doughnuts protect tenons from splitting, knocks down in 2 minutes for travel.

Well done! A friend built a carving horse for making long bows. His is functional but not quite as nice as yours.

Thanks Ben, we"ll move it into the house for DH, and you can serve some of that Kick"in Punkin Pie on it!!! I could almost smell it!

Very nice--it's a work of art in itself! This one's no work of art, but it's quite functional--I heard it called a "shave pony", as it's a smaller version of the shave horse. Just threw together from softwood 2x4's, but it's lasted several years already and is indispensable for holding round stock for handle shaping. I could never see the point of paying $10 for a poorly grained, poorly shaped handle when I can make my own, from my own wood, that is shaped the way I want it for the cost of my time!

I like that compact design. I did some research but never came across that version. I did want to work on longer pieces and do no have much for benches to anchor it. Some of the old tools are still the best.

Throw "shave pony" into Google and you'll get back quite a few hits. One page is attached. Nice because you can stand up to your work, it's compact, and it's easily portable, plus I made the whole thing in about an hour.
