I need to replace a muffler on Briggs 8hp alum block engine the steel muffler on there now is fused/rusted to the block.Any hints on removing muffler? Thanks, Jack

Is the current muffler bolted on? If so, you can bet the bolts will break upon removal. The exhaust port is most likely threaded with pipe thread. Clean the threads thoroughly and use a screw in muffler.

Cut the muffler off so you can get into the nipple that is screwed into the block. Leave enough sticking out that you can get a vice grips on it. Take a dremel or hack saw blade and cut a slit in the nipple length wise to relieve the threads. Soak it all down with penitrating oil and let it sit a while. Slitting should allow the threads to loosen enough you can them unscrew the nipple.

I've done what Chris said when the threaded end of a conduit was broken off inside a fitting. Except make 2 cuts with the hack saw blade. Then you can pry the broken fitting out with a screw driver.

I've never tried this, but how about starting the engine, let it get good and warmed up, and then spray penetrating oil on the exhaust pipe fitting as it cools down? Wouldn't that be the same technique as some of use to remove severly stuck bolts?
