Buic Battery Question

A friend that is not into mechanical things had to get the battery replaced in a '02 Buick today. He went to one of the chain parts places. Clerk told him that since the car has a computer, that a regular battery will not work.. Sold him some "Special voltage" battery, for over 140 dollars. I call BS..

Some of the GM cars have the battery under the back seat and take a special battery that has vent tubes that vent the charging gases out below the floor. I'll bet he got tangled up in one of those deals and they added a little nnalert on the side!

I call BS. What is the difference between a "regular" and "special voltage" battery? Batteries are rated by amp-hours and cold-cranking amps, anyway, not voltage.

That said, expect a good battery to set you back a hundred bucks.

Like Bob says, "H" body GM cars have a sealed battery under the rear seat with a vent tube to vent the gasses outside the car. That's the only special thing about it. Ditto on a good battery costing $100.

Yes he did say it was under the rear seat.. I think they saw him coming.. He did say they had one battery that was more. It may have been an Optima.

My 1978 Coevette has the battery behind the drivers seat. nothing special about it, just a sealed Delco battery. No vent tube

I bet the parts book/ excuse me computer/ had the notation S/V for this application and the pimply faced geek, err... I mean parts professional, decided that must mean special voltage instead of sealed/vented or some such as he was too smart to read the footnotes.
Not that I have ever encountered that sort of behavior in a pimply faced geek/errr parts professional ....

For a top end battery with the highest CCA rating. Sounds about right.
It's possible the "parts expert" behind the counter was confused with voltage and current.
You really can't install too high capacity of a battery.

Under the back seat , that makes it a pain to jump his old tractor off in the winter I bet !!

Like others have said, I think the clerk was confused. It has nothing to do with the car having a computer at all........and special voltage???? That's laughable!
There may be a special size or as already stated, one with a vent to the outside of the car. When a battery is being charged it gives off a bit of hydrogen gas through the electrolysis process. Probably not enough to ever cause a problem but certainly something that the manufacturer does not want to take any chances with.
It is likely a good quality battery and for a special application it may just add a few more bucks to the price.

Thanks for the input, I was curious... The guy that bought the battery was telling me the story of the "Special Voltage", and I got real suspicious.. He is a good guy, lives in town, does not own any tools, but considers himself an automotive expert..
I did not argue with him, as long as he is happy that he has a Special battery...
