Please help,...anyone out there? If the torque converter is bad should there be a wining noise when the car is in idle mode in neutral? the car runs fine. There is a consatant low level kind of high pitched wine when the engine is running. It seems more or less unaffected by speed or changing gears(it's automatic). One mechanic said it was the alternator but $300 later there has been NO Change in the sound.

Back yard stethoscope,dowel/broomhandle,place one end to ear, other end on various components.
BE DANG CAREFUL,STAY AWAY FROM BELTS/FAN.Piece of garden hose will work too.

All kinds of bearings: alternator, power sterring, air conditioner, water pump, idler(s). Take serpentine belt off and see if noise goes away.

SORRY bts , alternators can make a racket, get a long plastic funnel or wood broom handle and listen to suspect areas... I can only offer My observation... General motors quit making real cars back in the early 70s , by 1994 GM was throwing all their business to Japanese ,chinese , taiwanese , dirtyKnees rice bunny junk , that the liberals bought in droves ,,

I agree. I never pay people to work on my stuff, I pay them to FIX it. Some mechanics don't understand the concept until I explain it to them.

Use a tool, as others have suggested, too locate the source of the noise. I use a long screwdriver. Put the tool on the top of the transaxle, and listen, it should be noticeably louder at the source. It could be the trans pump, as it is driven by the Torque Conv. good luck..

I have a 96 Buick and it has made a winning sound since I"ve owned it (three years), I thought it was most likely the transmission and was concerned it would leave me walking one day so I asked a mechanic friend about it. He told me a high percentage of GM FWD cars have it, comes from a bearing in the transmission. He also said don"t worry about it, just drive it. Said he has seen many with 200K + on them and still going strong.
