Well, I got the Suburban up and running, as some of you might remember. Turns out it was a 1984, not a 1985. My wife pointed that out. I don't know how I got the other year into my head....

So, now I'd like to configure it with a brake controller. I've always let a mechanic do that work for me in the past, but money is tighter now. So, this machine does not have a more modern electrical system with a brake controller plug-in available. How difficult would it be to make this work? Would the kit include USEFUL instructions? My two pickups have Tekonsha controllers, but I really don't have a preference. Any suggestions about brand of controller?

By the way, the Suburban in question is a 3/4 ton package w/ a 454 engine. I would not use it on trailers rated more than 7K (at least I don't think so).

Thanks for the help.

Christopher

Evil has good advice.
I like the Tekonsha Prodigy. It automaticaly senses level so you don't have to adjust it. It has three levels of braking with the fine tuning knob in each range.
It will have good instructions with it. Before trucks had the plug in system I used to wire them in our trucks at work with no problem and I'm no rocket scientist.

4 wires all 12 gauge
hot from battery
ground from battery
signal from brakes
brake line out to trailer
I prefer to run wires directly from the battery to the brake controller and on to the trailer wire connector on back of the truck. This insures a good ground and hot at both places.
If you have seperate brake, turn lamps on back then I prefer to run a wire back up to the controller. I have tapped the wire coming off of the brake switch but have had problems doing this
good luck
Ron
