They are for greasing bearings on machinery like the shafts on seed cleaners and other old equipment. The ones on the mill don"t have those prongs in them. You just give them a twist once or twice a day when the machine was stopped or as needed for lubrication. To fill them you just unscrewed the cap and filled with grease and replaced.

My guess is the prongs would fit inside the hex part of the fitting and probably prevent rotation from vibration. They were used on most old machinery that had babbitt bearings because they needed a small amount of grease frequently. I had a 4" pump that had one on the packing gland.

lots of old horse drawn equipment used those grease caps, such as discs, on the boxings.

I would say it's a grease cup. The prongs are to mix the grease when you give the cap a twist.

Purely a guess on my part, but might hold some sort of wick type stopper to "meter" the oil through the threaded fitting...possibly to drip onto a moving chain.

not sure but possibly these act as a brake so the cap does not vibrate loose and be lost
