I asked a co-worker if he had replaced a belt on a dryer. He said yes. Took him about 45 minutes to figure out how to route it between the pulleys because the old one had broken and there was not a drawing of how the belt goes on. Are most dryers the same? Does any one know how it goes, so I don't have to waste time trying to "reinvent the wheel"? He has more mechanical aptitude than I do.

The new belt had a diagram on it. Without that I would probably not have gotten the job done.
Thank you all

Smooth side of the belt goes against the drum, and against the idler pulley or tightener. Ribbed side goes against the motor "pulley". Watch you don't route the belt over any sharp edges.

My new belt came with a diagram inside the package - did you look to see if there were directions in the package?

I also drew the diagram on the inside of the dryer cabinet with a Sharpie pen. For next time.

Nice of you guys to help the lady. Have patience so she won't feel too bad about inconveniencing you. Most folks want to pay their own way, but some can't. I believe Someone is keeping score.

YES - as IH2444 says, ALWAYS disconnect the power.

SDE,

I've changed many dryer belts over the years. Every one of them has had the same routing. Obviously, the belt goes around the drum. There will be a spring-loaded idler pulley near the motor.

1. Push the pulley against the spring so that it is under tension by the spring.

2. While holding the spring-loaded pulley away from the motor, simply put the belt around the motor pulley.

3. Release the tension on the spring-loaded pulley. It should contact the BACK of the belt, and put pressure on the belt so that it now tight around the motor pulley.

Good luck. If you ever put one on successfully, you'll never forget how to do it again.

Very descriptive. When ours broke, it took me a half hour to figure it out. That idler pulley was against the wall of the dryer and I kept trying to put it together in what SEEMED to be the right way but was actually the opposite. Once you've done it, you don't forget. Our dryer was a wedding gift and is 34 years old, so I've changed several belts and the drum support pulleys also. Haven't change the light bulb yet.

Does that mean you have decided to get by without the light?

Thank you

One thing, ever dryer I have worked on you have to remove the front panel so you can slip the belt over the drum.

Always disconnect the power!

Thank you for that info. It may keep me from scratching the hair off my head, while wondering how in the world they did it.
