Building a bandsaw mill

Anybody got any suggestions for building a bandsaw mill? Thinking about building one with 20 inch wheels. What horsepower engine would it take? Got a Honda 13 hp horzontial shaft and have most of the parts laying around. Thanks DH

Do an internet search on this. My brother and I had a great time building two different mills with off the shelf materials. See

for pictures of mine.

There are many ways to accompish this and they all result in a cheap, accurate mill.

Good luck

Hey DH, go over to the Forestry Forum and poke around (won't post a link, but they're easy to find); very knowledgeable people. I used to hang out over there, but it was too 'moderated' to suit my tastes..........

Also I found a website diybandmill.com with a lot of information. DH

I bought a mill after giving up the idea of building one.Problems with weld distortion will drive you nuts.I couldnt figure out to get the 20 ft tracks home. You will make mistakes on home built equipment.Steel prices ar very high now.You might end up with a good mill or a pile of scrap.

Look for one of the ones that cut on an angle, leading edge of the saw is usually 4-5" ahead of the back end. They cut a lot easier, lot easier to keep the wood straight than saws where the band runs perpendicular to the log. The one I"ve used is Amish made in Pennsylvania, uses a 40hp Isuzu diesel and we"ve cut oak logs squared down to 30"x30" with it.
