Broken drive point cap

Putting in a 2" well point in the back yard for lawn sprinklers. Because of the location (walk out basement and creek at the edge of the yard) I chose to drive a point down. I have water coming in the hole at less than 3 feet and the soil is mixed sand and fine gravel. I can't draw from the creek because it goes dry in the mid to late summer.

Using a 4 foot point and 5 foot section of drive casing I have it down about 6 feet and have broken the drive cap. I have been using a 16 lb sledge and overall have been pleased with the progress until the cap split. When it let loose it stripped the threads off the top of the drive pipe. Really too bad because I started to make good progress suddenly.

My problem is that I don't think I can hand thread 2" pipe and I need new threads to replace the drive cap. The coupler and the top of the point is under water and in the sand. I am worried about being able to take the drive pipe out and having the sand fill in the point where I can't get clean threading to re-join the point. I am hesitant to pull the point up a few feet (using the rear lift on my 2N) but recognize that it may be the best choice.

Any ideas/experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Dont know how much room you have around the pipe to work but theres a tool called a pony. Its real name is Hand Held Power Drive .Takes 110 volts threads up to 2 inch althgough Ive seen it with attachments to 4 inch .Tried to post a link but failed Go to Rigid Tools site.

You may find that you can wiggle the pipe in a circle enough to loosen it so you can pull it up. With any kind of luck you will get it down in the same hole easily.

I know it is too late to help right now but we have always put a drive coupling on top of the section and then used a 6 inch nipple to the drive cap. If we could see the coupling we knew we were lifting the driver too high and saved the threads of the drive pipe.

I don't know why you can't thread 2" pipe by hand we did it for years, with an Adjustable Rigid Hand machine.

We used to use a cap like that and had the same thing happen , so we just went ahead and drove the pipe in by just hitting the pipe to where we wanted it and cut off the bad part and rethreaded it

Drive caps and couplings are special heavy duty fittings. You have to check the cap often to make sure it stays tight. We used a tripod and drive weight 40 years ago.

Thanks for all the good suggestions guys. I have access to a hand die and will try re-threading.

I had thought about adding a coupling and a short nipple on the next pass. RWK confirms that this may be a good approach.

Have a wonderful day guys!!
