Building Costs Dropping...?

Someday...I plan on building a pole barn (machine shed). I have not looked into anything seriously, but while talking to a guy a couple weeks ago he was saying how building materials such as steel and framing materials have recently dropped way down in price. Is that so? Anyone follow the prices closely?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

I dont know about steel, but it seems to me lumber prices are pretty low right now,I really dont keep up but they are lower than I remember them to be.And another thing,I was in LOWES today and three employees actually asked if they could help me!!! thats NEVER happened before!sure didnt seem like there were as many customers as there would have been a year ago and most of them were in garden section.

I experienced the same thing at Home Depot- I was swarmed by customer service people- to the extent that I was looking behind me to see if the Governor was back there. Big difference from having them duck into adjacent aisles to avoid me, as in the past. Or tell me "that's not my area". Guess that's one positive for the mess we're in- people are recognizing that its good that they have a job- and determined to keep it.

I had that happen to me recently at Tractor Supply. I didn't need help. But, was shocked to have someone actually come over, take intrest, and try. It really caught my attention.

Material prices may have come down a bit, but as far as the labor goes.... no one is hungery yet. Another thing I experienced with the labor end of it, no one is in a hurry to snatch up work either. I was wanting some under ground electrical work done, called 3 guy's, 1 showed up 2 days later, 1 showed up 3 weeks later, and the 3rd one was a no-show period. Guess the economy isn't so bad after all. Needed some concrete work done.... 1 bid was for $5600.00 the next one was a little over $9000.00. Yardage was the same and so was the tonage of rock. hmmmm!

I work for a commercial interior contractor. Metal studs have dropped about 40% since September. All steel is down. Might be a good time to build that shed.

$8000 should build about a 30x40 shed.
(no concrete)

Price it all out, wood vs. steel.
Concrete vs. gravel floor.
search the web for manf. web sites, types, cost, steel gauge thickness etc.

Howdy
Glenn, it looks like lumber prices are down, but I haven't noticed any price drop on steel or concrete. If you come up with a good plan to build without steel or concrete and still have low maintenance let me know, my shed could use replacing and expansion.

Steel is down as well. I sided my pole barn last April and paid about $3.25 a foot for steel siding. This year the same siding is around $2.00 a foot.

Then add at least another $1,000 for overhangs/eves.
Then double that if someone else puts it up for you.
