Hey guys I'm hoping some of you have run across this problem before. My front door is one of the galvanized metal ones with the vinyl coating on it. Back during the summer the coating started loosening itself from the surface of the door for some reason. Now it has come completely loose and is hanging in several strips. Unfortunately it isn't October or I could pass it off as Halloween decoration because it makes the door look horrible. My problem is that it hasn't come off all over the door, just in the middle, which we all know leaves the outside edges of it still covered. I could take it off and sandblast it but I know that would take off most or all of the galvanizing. Being an exterior door that means it'll be prone to rust at some future time which would be about as bad as what I'm facing now. So, beyond blasting do any of you have any idea what I might use to remove the remaining vinyl from the door? If I can get it off I can repaint the door and make the place look civilized again, but I know it's worthless to try painting til I can get all the old stuff off. I would really appreciate any ideas and suggestions ya'll might have. Thanks.....

Heat gun or hair dryer to soften adhesive, peel slowly, then remove remaining adhesive with solvent. Should to the trick without scratching door.

One day the wife and I decided to spruce up the front door with a paint job.Two days later after stripping the paint the wife, for some stupud reason, thought she would clean [SCRATCH UP]the glass with a razor blade. Finally the door was put back because we needed a door on the house. Its still not painted because ours has to look good so I have to use auto paint.that was three years ago and still its in primer. Then I stop by a freinds place and lo and behold he has the same door brand new.So i said hey nice door the wife and I just spend 50 hrs.restoring ours to primer. Then my freind said I bought this one at home depot for 70 dollars already painted white. So that all said my advice is buy a new one.

Wayne, since there is no paint on the door, only galvanizing, why not try some MEK or acetone?? It should soak through & melt the adhesive. If that does not work, maybe some paint remover containing Methylene Chloride would do it..

First check the jams for Mfg label, may be warranteed for up to 20 yrs....As to removal,I would try a heat gun(hair dryer)and a razor blade scraper or such,to minimize damaging galvanization or internal plastic, wood or vinyl components,When repainting I would use an automotive or industrial grade paint to provide a hard and weatherproof finish.
