I have a Craftsman 31cc 17" cut weedeater. It ran very well until this year. It wouldn't crank, so I cleaned the carburetor and replaced the spark plug. I couldn't get it to start, then a friend of mine told me to tighten the idle screw all the way down and then back it out 1 and a half turns. It cranked but would only run on half choke for awhile but quit after about 5 minutes. I thought I would adjust the 2 other screws a little bit, too. Well, now it will only run for a few seconds. First of all, what does each of the 2 adjustment screws adjust, and second, is there an easy way to find a starting point for fine tuning(such as 2 turns from tightened all the way) ?Please email me if you need more info. Thanks, Eric |

Try cleaning the muffler like bill said. We have an Echo weedeater that would not throttle up all the way. We took it to a local shop and they cleaned the carbon from the exhaust port and spark arrestor and now it runs perfect.

Look in the fuel tank for the fuel line. Get something to fish it out, there's a filter on the end of the hose. Clean it, blow air through it. One of the biggest problems with small engines..filters..

These engines use a Walbro carburetor. One marked 'H' is high speed mixture so must be set when running at full speed and the other marked 'L' is of course the low speed adjustment and must be set at idle. Start with each screw adjusted out 1 1/4 turns and adjust in and out until max speed is achieved once the engine has reached full operating temperature. Set low speed first. How is the spark plug, new?

Don't adjust for highest speed on those two-cycle engine. Adjust it richer so it slows down and burbles or "four-cycles" at no load. Adjusting for max speed at no load will be too lean and you will spoil the engine.

tighten the "Idle" screw till it contacts throttle Then give it about 1/2 turn more. Other 2 adjustments are for Hi and Lo speed. Run them in(But not real tight as you will damage seat) Back each one off 1 and 1/2 turns and this should give a starting place.

Remove your muffler and clean the carbon out of your exhaust port and spark arrestor.
