Does anyone have any suggestions how a crack in the very back of the cylinder on a CT 2 HP Stover hit and miss engine? it is leaking water from the hopper into the cylinder near the very back of the cylinder. Thanks for your help. |

Just a note on cleaning the metal before JB Weld. I started using brake parts cleaner for de-greasing. It sucks the oil right out of the pores and dries quickly. Also you get to keep your eye brows if things go bad. PK

I had a similar crack in an INT.LA 3-5hp engine. It was far enough back that the rings didn't travel over it. So I took the piston out and used a mini grider to open the crack up some more and then used some J.B. Weld to fill the crack and then honed it down some. Since the rings didn't travel over it the J.B. Weld sealed it up. That was over 15 years ago and it's still running.

Thanks for your reply. The rings don't travel over this area of the cylinder either. Is all JB Weld the same?

I just used the original stuff. Go to their web site and look, they have different stuff for different application, but it looks like the original is the one to use. Make sure you have it good and CLEAN for it to hold. Once I had the crack opened up I used starting fluid to clean it out. Starting fluid will cut any oil in the metal. Also make sure you clean out the sump. You don't want any metal grindings getting into the bearings. Good Luck.
