I have an old Wisconsin engine from a military powerplant. The date is June 67. The model no. is MAENLD. Spec no. is 171633. Size is 3x3 1/4. According to the tag it says 6.95 cont. BHP. Judging by the size of the engine it looks like at least a 14-16 HP engine. Anyone know anything about these engines? |

Thanks for the replies. Good info to know. That thing is huge for a 9 hp engine. I have Kohler and Briggs 12 & 16 hp engines that are smaller! This one has all the millitary features, looks the same as new. When the local fire dept. retired it (hardly used) it was put on a water pump that was never used because there was a problem priming it so it just got shoved in the corner.

MAENLD, is a military version of an AENL. It is a "Heavy Duty" engine, as designated by the Mfr.. The "M" prefex is "Military, "D" suffex is for heavy duty, and means Stellite valves and hardened valve seats. Such a configuration is OK for burning non leaded gas.AENL engines were rated at 9.2 hp at 3600 RPM, though you"ll get longer life if you don"t run it that fast. An ex Wisconsin Motors employee once told me that 2800 RPM was "Best". Your engine has Timken roller bearings, and an oil pump.If it hasn"t been changed, your engine will have a military radio interference sheilded magneto, shielded metallic covered spark plug wire, and a special "Military" sheilded spark plug. If you have magneto,(no spark) problems, standard points, condenser and coil for a WICO, or, Fairbanks-Morse, magneto will fit,,,whatever brand yours is. A standard civilian magneto, and plug will fit also, Parts are readly available, NAPA head gasket is(Fel-Pro) #7686S, complete gasket set is #FS7686S-1 Valves and piston rings are still available from NAPA auto parts. It should have a Zenith Carb, #0-12235, 12236, 12375, or 12522, and the NAPA carb kit # 2-1565 fits all of those numbers. Get yourself a Wisconsin owners and parts book. Or search around in www.wisconsinmotors.com and you can download a free parts book. Wisconsin motors is still very much in business, and you can get parts from distributors listed in that web site, but they seem to think that they"re gold plated, and are very expensive. If you have the Wisconsin parts numbers you can find lot of parts on the web, One other thing---oil, the Wis. owners book lists lots of oil viscositys for different operating temperating..Jungle to Arctic I have lots of Wisconsin engines, and use 10-30 in everything, with no problems

The current engine is rated at 9.2 hp. That is probably at 3600 rpm. Yours might be rated at a lower rpm

There's a bunch of info over at ASECC, but I don't think they specifically show the AENL with the military prefix.
