Are you sure JD used M or MT as stationary/power units? All the upright two cyl. power units I have seen were based om the LA tractor engine which is an upright flat head design 3 1/2x4 bore and stroke.

Well, what type of engine?
John Deere made "Big Flywheel" type 1 cyl engines
Tractor type, such as "A" or "B" tractor 2 cyl
stationary engines. 2 cyl upright engines such as
used in M and MT tractors were sold as stationary
power units. And "Modern 4 and 6 cyl gas or
diesel engines are available for irrigation pumps
and standby power units.
"Gas Engine" Magazine, devoted to big flywheel
engines, has ads for engines wanted, and for sale
