What is the best method to paint the raised letters on the top of radiator and on the back of the axles of an unstiled John Deere tractor. Brush ? Roller ? Sponge ? My hand is not very steady and patents (sp?) short. Thanks for any help ? |

You can also reverse paint the letters. In other words, paint the letters first, with a thick coat of paint; then paint the tractor. When the new paint is dry, wet sand the letters, the previous color will now be exposed. AP

A few days ago I saw on tv some kind of restoration work (can't remember what it was), where for about two seconds in the background was a hand using a small foam brush painting raised letters. It seems like it would be quite easy, as the foam brush doesn't have bristles like an ordinary brush, which tend to drop over the sides of the raised section. Foam brushes are cheap, like 50¢, so they don't need cleaning, just toss them. Maybe if you have an old tire with RAISED LETTERS, you can try out the foam brush, or any other method, before working on the tractor. I wonder how they did it at the factory in the old days??

The factorys use silk screens. A fine screen that was wax coated except for the letters. The screen was placed over the parts and paint was forced thru the screen with a squizzy. Still used to day on some low production parts. It also possible to nail a thin piece of leather to something flat. Paint the leather and press it to the letters.

I always tape over the whole area then use an exato modeling knife to cut out raised letters....then spray it...cover area good with tape and paper to min. over spray....Paint tractor first, let paint cure ....after cutting out letters scuff lightly with scotch brite pad then paint...to me its easier this way...takes some time though.... hope this helps
