I just took it all apart for total restoration and the water pump is pretty basic, Impellers are moving freely with nothing else to inhibit performance. What else would cause overheating? JK2 01-26-2013 19:29:42 67.72.98.45 Report to Moderator	Re: MM water pump in reply to Mendontractorguy, 01-19-2013 14:57:26   Two things not mentioned are: If you do put a new thermostat in the top radiator hose, make sure it has a hole in it to allow some water to go through or it will boil before the thermostat opens. 1/8" hole is fine. A thermostat for an 8N ford works. R's and Z's have what is refered to as a BAFFLE (RE521) around the impeller. If it is missing, the engine will sometimes run hot. [Reply]  [No Email]

If the timing is running retarded, it will heat up quick. Tocheck the advance, remove distrib cap, grab the rotor and give it a flip. It should move some and then snap back. You could also have a block that is full of rust and lime and needs to be flushed. My self I use white vinegar. Drain the system and fill with vinegar and run it till hot. Let cool and drain then flush with water from a garden hose. Best way is to rig up a way to use the block drain to flush it [Reply]  [No Email]

A seemingly unnessary hose clamp in the middle of the hose and a hard spot in the hose is a tipoff. I also agree to look for a stuck distributor advance or retarded ign timing. Have also seen overheating from a bad water pump seal leaking air into the system. [Reply]  [No Email]
