I have a 1946 farmall A that suddenly refused to start. I took out the battery and put it on a bench charger for about 36 hours. When I went to put it back in, I forgot about the positive ground issue and think I accidentally put it to negative ground. Naturally, it did not start. After several crankings, I realized my mistake and re-set the battery to positive ground. It still would not crank. Additionally, the lights would not work. So, I went and got a new 6-volt battery, set it to positive ground, and cranked it. It started up, runs like a charm but still no lights. So, I checked the voltmeter on the tractor while it was running .... It has four settings... The first, directly down in the off position showed 0 amps... The next two notches to the left and heading upward showed about 4 amps ... And finally the last setting showed about 13-14 amps. I'm now beginning to think my generator has bad brushes or needs complete replacement. The other thing I'm thinking is that by setting the bench-charged battery to negative ground by mistake, I may have reversed the polarization in the generator. Any thoughts on why my lights are not working? |

| | The starter should still have cranked (and in same direction) REGARDLESS of battery polarity..... if all else was okay If the tractor were started and the genny was at opposite polarity from the battery YOU CAN DAMAGE THE VR If you run through my Troubleshooting Procedure it will help diagnose you non charging problem and in its Para 5 show you how to see if its a genny or a VR problem. BOTH the Genny and VR or LHBD light switch (if a cutout relay system tractor) NEED GOOD GROUNDS TO WORK. Id insure all 3 are well grounded John T |
