I am interested in keeping the generators on my tractors. I would like to know if it is possible to rebuild a 6 volt generator to a 12 Volt generator. I understand with an alternator conversion the coil, light bulbs and fuses would have to be changed but keep the same starter. What would need to be done, if the generator can be rebuilt as a 12 volt? Would also like to know who does this work! Thanks |

| An ad in "Hemmings Motor News", the antique auto magazine, sells alternators inside generator shells. Looks original..keeps battery charged at idle! |

| What I did was take my generator and starter to my local electric motor shop and had both converted to 12 volt, replaced the 6 volt coil with a 12 volt, changed the light bulbs....it looks original with the benifits of 12 volt system. |

| Weaver's Repair Shop in Denver, PA will have all stuff you need in stock. Perhaps send them the generator to be rebuilt and have them send regulator back with rebuild. Their # is 717.445.4516 Good Luck, Andy |

| I"ve been told that somewhere out there in never-never land that someone is redoing generators as alternators, to keep tractors looking original. Don"t know who or where, but I believe it can be done. |

| | The generator can be rebuilt to 12V. You will also need a 12V voltage regulator that matches your 12V generator, replace the ignition coil with a 3 ohm 12V coil or add a 1.5 ohm ignition ballast resistor and reuse the original 6V coil. Replace all light bulbs with 12V versions. You should not have to replace the fuse or fuseholders, they will work fine on 12V. Generators and Vr's are getting harder to find, they have not been installed on anything new in 40-50 years. |

Voltage regulators, both 6 volt and 12 volt, are readily available from a wide variety of sources.
Brand new, 6 volt generators for the Farmalls can also be had, but they are pricey. |

| Don't forget about rebuilding the starter to match the genny. Some say they just spin faster, but they can break some expensive stuff if not converted, especially on Dubuques. No fun breaking one in half to change ring gears, and even harder to find a bull nose for the starters. |
