Trying to free up the collar on the drive shaft of my 309 planter. The collar should slide on the shaft for adjusting the 3 gears for seed spacing. It is frozen with years of no use. I heated it and have got it to move a bit, but need a good soaking solvent to work it loose. Any suggestions Gary |

| When you heat it, get the collar red hot then cool it emediately with cold water. |

| For years I have talked with the oldtimers that have restored old engines and tractors. They all swear by freeing up frozen parts with army surplus "Rifle Bore Cleaner" I've seen it work on some very nasty looking machinery parts over nite. |

| | Just gotta ask... anybody EVER used olive oil??? Some guy told my husband that olive oil is a good penetrating oil (the guy seemed to be more of a talker than a doer). Course we never tried it - the stuff it expensive and good to EAT! But we do keep joking about it. Simply curious if anybody EVER has. :) |

| i like the pb blaster, i buy the gallon jugs of it, and then get the cheap plastic pump sprayer bottles. handy for hosing down what ever you are working on. i was at farm and fleet last week, and they now have the pb blaster in 5 gallon jugs. it may not be the best in the world penetrating oil, but its not that expensive and gives good results. |

| The best penetrating oil I have ever used is homemade and beats even Kroil. We have a race car and use Royal Purple synthetic motor oil and we are always changing oil. We mix the used Royal Purple synthetic with diesel fuel at a 50/50 mix. Works great! |

| I like kroil, just not the price. 99% of the time I just use PB Blaster. |

| Gary, I have been a somewhat loyal fan of kroil for years, also like in this order -from spray products one called 'nuts off',PR blaster, presto, then the also ran products and at the bottom of the list comes liquid wrench and WD-40 ,the last two aren't worth bringing home. Last fall I had a new hardware salesman in from a co called kimball-midwest, he touted his flavor of penetrating oil ,so I bought some . Turns out to be as good as kroil or better. I am a hard sell and this product has done it. It is a thinner product and much less stinky ,also leaves much less mess. george |

| I like ATF, as well as PB Blaster. WD40 is a joke with the current formulation. When I can apply heat, I also touch a candle to the part as it cools down. Wax melts into the threads, loosening them. Even used it recently on a stubborn spark plug, using just engine heat. Had to do it twice on that one. |

| I have used Kroil on my projects for years. Kroil can be had in either a liquid or an aerosol (aerokroil). I prefer the liquid as you get more bang for your buck. I get my Kroil from midwayusa.com. This site sells firearm and shooting related products and this penetrating oil is often used by match shooters for squeaky clean barrels. |

| Some one at one time posted a chart that compared many oil for what your doing and ATF was at the top or very close. I keep an old pumper oil can full of ATF around and have found on the real tough stuff pour on some ATF then let it sit a while then heat it up if you can then pour some more ATF on it and most of the time it will free up. I just used that method on a set of tines on a tiller and got them both to come off and it has sat in my junk pile for years now but they freed up so I could loosen up the gear box |

| I've tried them all. Wouldn't give PB Blaster for all the rest put together, including trans fluid and acetone, diesel fuel or any other snake oil mixtures. I buy it by the case. |

| | For me it depends on the scenario. I use WD 40 1st. It's cheap, cleans up easy and works fine. If that isn't working, rarely, I do have 50% acetone & 50% trans fluid mixed up and ready to go. I only use this if I can't heat it up and have some time. If I'm in a hurry, and it's a common fastener, it's either going to come apart or break. Either is fine. |

| Choosing the best penetrant is as controvesial as judging a beauty pagent. Most amy seems to work but after the job is finished successfully we all claim that we have made the proper choice and when one fails after one trial we know that one is no good. Our friend Old has had great success with automatic transmission fluid, So far I have done well with Liquid Wrench or diesel fuel. Now the discussion will begin. |
